Topic: Several questions on SATA drives (Read 3515 times)

Ok, I know that i should not have to ask questions either though i am a pc tech since '98.

Now i do iknow what to look for in a HDD. (thats a given) the question is how reliable are they? and can I trust that they wont go out on me?

and yes i do read pc magazines. so i do keep up w/ the latest gadgets that come out.

Well a SCSI drive is still the best way to go, though more expensive, but I have no problems with my 80 GB Serial ATA (SATA) drive since I got it almost 6 months ago.. it is fast and reliable.. however I would not run it at maximum performance.. makes it noisy and wears it out faster.. I would run it medium high in performance settings..

Mine has been working fine for over a year now. It definatly a better setup than the ole IDE connection

Well Seagate seems to think that their drives will last at least five years. At least according to Seagate's manufacturer warranty, in fact Newegg.com only lists Seagate internal computer hard drives with 5 year warranties. The last hard drive that I bought was a Seagate 200GB SATA, and I am very happy with it. It's quiet and the utility software that comes with the drive or that you can download works very well. As long as Seagate offers 5 year warranties I see no reason to buy from any other company. Hope this helps.

I have a brand new 250gb Hitachi SATA which has been working wonderfully. No trouble at all.

Great prices, phenominal (sp?) service. I had to RMA (return) one product, and they exchanged it and I had it back within a week, and that's cross country. (I live in Mass, newegg is in California.)

I'll concur; Newegg is great.

But do shop around; they are only GENERALLY great; every now and then one of the other online stores has a special blowout price on one item. It may be the one you are looking for!

But again, in general, their prices and service can't be beat. Most of my online computer component and electronic buying I've done there.

Other stores I recommend that I dealt with: mwave.com (reliability), ewiz.com (price, though I had no problems the one time I dealt with them), monarchcomputer.com (same as with ewiz).

There are some small ones too, and though I had a good experience, I hesitate only because they just have a less "solid feel" to them.

I agree about Newegg, the other on-line store I would recommend that I have dealt with is Directron.com. I have bought from them a couple of times in the past and have been very pleased. I don't think I trust them as much as I do Newegg in the same way Ed described as the "solid feel" to them. But if you are looking for hard to find items or items that are going out of production I've found Directron to be a good place to look.

i don't know if i would recomment monarchcomputers i ordered a video card through them, ended up to be a DOA, RMAed, next card was also DOA..... that and thier customer service really sucks... trying to get through to someone might take several hours as i found out

I ended up losing 50 bucks because i decided that i did not feel like dealing with them any more and returned my card and got my money back minus restocking fees. To me one DOA is ok, i figured my luck would run out eventually. but 2 in a row seems a little wierd to me.... ended up buying through newegg, spent 15 bucks more i think but at least it worked the first time

I did finally buy a Maxtor 60gig SATA drv. (I can hear the moaning and groaning already).

But at $79.00 it was the cheapest there. And yes, i am on a budget still.

A budget is the most important reason of all, although I wish you would have given us a price limit. I would have shown you this option at NewEgg.

Hey Tus!

Based on your account, I hurried up and put my kid's computer together (it was tough, after hours when he's gone to bed... got a cut pinky from pushing a HD too hard into its bay

) and turned it on. Sonofgun of a video card from Monarch, it worked! But thanks for the warning.

If you hadn't warned me, I would have lollygagged around and putzed around with SFC or these forums until the night before I give it to him and if it didn't work then, I'd be really upset and by then, Monarch COULD claim I waited too long. So, thanks, man!

But I hope really that they, or Mwave, Zipzoomfly, Ewiz, Directron, Tiger, would every now and every then give Newegg, as much as I love and value their existence, a run for their money. You know, to keep everybody honest.
