Star Wars - No Spoilers Please!
« on: May 16, 2005, 08:22:35 pm »
I am looking forward to seeing this movie as soon as possible. Has anyone seen it or read any reviews? I'd like to know if it is any good, but I don't want to learn all the details. I've already heard too many and I am trying to see the movie before I see and hear everything.

Here in Chihuahua it starts at 1201 a.m. on May 19 and will be running on most of the cinemas for 24/7! I'm going to try to get into the VIP section of the theater as most Chihuahuans cannot afford it, they go to the normal parts of the theater. What I mean by that is VIP is it's own screens and a completely different atmosphere, captains chairs, tables, waiters, finer food (not that popcorn or nachos or candy crap) and ANY drinks you desire!  ;D

I've read the book, and can tel you if they let you see a tenth of what is going on in the book, it's going to be one of the richest plotlines in SW- forgone conclusion or not.

I've read two newspaper reviews so far. Both have said it is FAR better than Eps I & II and one even went so far as to say it is arguably better than Ep VI.

Dare we hope?

Again, having read what's going to happen already, it's going to be incredible.

It'll easially outdo I and II, and the claim that it'll rival VI is very accurate. I say that it can actually beat it out, if Hayden Christensen does a good job with playing Darth Vader.

Jaime's Correct, I've read the book, and It's Fantastic. Once again, the secondary Characters really make up for eps. 1 and 2.

Star Wars.com SUCKS, they have already released stories behind the characters, and yes, I already know how the movie will go, WITHOUT SEEING THE MOVIE YET OR READING THE BOOK!  :banghead:

George Lucas should have kept EVERYTHING top secret until May 19th, IMO...

We all do, especially since it's a prequel. ;D ;)

Sorry that you saw too much and got it spoiled. Trust me, though, there are some interesting things that happen that won't be covered to the letter on the site, and they'll be good enough.

The scene that got me was when Chewy, while going through the Pon Phar, ripped off C3P0's head to use as a condom. After he was done shagging Lando's dead grandmother, Chewy simply stuck it back on C3PO's shoulders. They explained that that how C3PO got that wide-eyed, shocked expression.  ;D ;D ;D

It's 0020 and no Star Wars. Why?

Well, the ticket says 5/18/05 12:01 am. That would be 19 minutes ago, right?

Well, apparently movie theaters don't use a real calendar, as they count that as "Wednesday Night" and not "Wednesday AM" like evey other person on the face of the Earth.

Grrrr.

Anyways, I get to do this all again tomorrow night it seems.

They may as well brush other movies aside in the theaters and devote all cinemas to the new Star Wars flick! Here's hoping that SW Ep 3 smashes the record for sales set by that long and mostly boring flick from years ago called "Titanic."  ;)

France is lucky, they got to see it a day earlier than the rest of us folks. Think George is political? Sure he is, just like most of us are!  ;)

How important is it to see this on a Digital screen?

The reason I ask is I got a free ticket for this Friday nite - paid for by my horrible employer no less - but its not a Digital screen.

And I remember Roger Ebert made a big deal of saying it is very blurry on regular screens...

Should I use the ticket to sneak into Kingdom of Heaven instead?

Don't know myself- but I can tell you thaqt about 40% of the movie is going to be FX shots if they do it right.

Lono, explain to the theater your situation and kindly ask that you be allowed into a digital screen room if possible.

As for my being in a VIP cinema room, it's not the QE2, but it is something so simple (like a van with doors on EITHER side?) that I think a LOT of Americans would go for if it was available. It's only 2-3 bucks more per ticket, and I've spent WAY more than that on my partying years!  ;) Makes for a great night out with a loved one or a date as well...

I had a thought tonight....

If all Stormtroopers are clones of Jenga Fett, and he was reasonably tall (6'1" ~ 6'3" or so....)  Leah's comment to 5"10" Luke on the Death Star just fits in a whole lot better:

"Aren't you a little SHORT for a Stormtrooper....?"

So then the question is:  Did Lucas plan this back in 1977, or was this just a throw-away line that he wrote in at the time that became significant through the random process of story-telling 25 years later?

Throw away line if you ask me.

Anyways, just got back from the theater.  Not bad, not bad. It wasn't the spectacular end all of Star Wars, but it was an excellent film. Worth your money, I say.

I was a little disappointed, though with the end. I just wanted a bit more. But oh well, still, great stuff!

yup, very good movie except for the very end. It's just like the game. I would have expect a little better for the movie.

Is it only me or Padme was awful in this one. Acting wise.

My favorite character in this movie is definatly a tie between the Emperor and Yoda. They were both great. The wookies were very well done. I just wished we'd see more of them.

Probably go see it again tomorow  ;D

Went to 1201 showing.

The book is better than the movie, Hands Down.  Movie is good, but not as good as the book

Rankings:

1) Ep V
2) Ep IV
3) Ep III
4) Ep VI
5) Ep II
6) Ep I

Pretty good I thought it was.  Act Mr Christiansen can, AotC compared to.

Shocked was I when Vader became, 'more' dialogue I expected.

After "the duel", had more words by Obi been spoken, cried I would have.  Best acting in series, that dialogue was thought I.

Padme no act, but hottie she remains.  Wish to see her nipples, I do.

See this movie four or five times, I will.

Help me stop speaking like a little green puppet, you must!!

PS - am I the only one that isn't a "TESB rulz" fanboi?  That episode was better than TPM and AotC, but ANH and RotJ smoke it hands down in my opinion.

ANH was such a slow moving movie though. I think most people only like it because it was the first.

ESB was definitly awesome, the fight between Vader/Luke is still amazing. (though you do have to wonder about Vader's lightsaber skills after seeing him and Kenobi go at it)

OK, to answer that question, I'll delve into the Wonderful World of D20:

Any cybernetic part (i.e. hand, foot, etc) attached leads to a -2 penalty for Force Ability checks. Since Darth Vader as he stands in Episode VI has about a -18 due to all the robo-junk attached, he can't make the rolls to do all those fancy tricks anymore. Add to that the fact that his skills haven't been tested in over 2 decades...

Well, he's not quite the man he used to be. ;)

I went to the 12:01 at my local theater.  The scene I have been waiting for for 28 years is finally on.  Obi-Wan and Darth Vader going at each other while riding a river of lava.  And then...THE F&*^$#G PROJECTOR BREAKS!!!

Needless to say, people were not happy.  It was finally fixed in about 20 minutes, but the flow was broken  :(

But I get a chance to see it again tonight with my nephews.  :)

You know, the next time I watch Episode IV and hear the line 'When last we met, I was but a learner..." I'll think to what happened in III and go 'no sh*t.'

Obi-Wan's 'You are the chosen one!' speech hit me.  He sounded convincingly betrayed...like he might not have believed in the prophecy, but he had believed in Anakin.
"Dialogue from a play, Hamlet to Horatio: 'There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.' Dialogue from a play written long before men took to the sky. Me too La'ra.  That was probably the best acting in the entire series I thought.  If Lucas would have stretched it out a little bit longer, I, and the entire theater, might have shed tears... it was that deathly silent in there during that scene.

OK, guys... I'm leaving to watch Ep.III now. Showtime is at 1800 and I'm getting a bit to eat before I go.

Hope it's as good as I'm expecting. You guys are giving some pretty encouraging reviews, because the movie is NEVER better than the book.

Went to 1201 showing.

The book is better than the movie, Hands Down.  Movie is good, but not as good as the book

Rankings:

1) Ep V
2) Ep IV
3) Ep III
4) Ep VI
5) Ep II
6) Ep I

ANH was such a slow moving movie though. I think most people only like it because it was the first.

ESB was definitly awesome, the fight between Vader/Luke is still amazing. (though you do have to wonder about Vader's lightsaber skills after seeing him and Kenobi go at it)

MY ranking

V
VI
III
II
IV
I

Ya'know, everybody's entitled to their own opinions....

...But your opinions are just WRONG!!!

OK, I'll grant'cha that ESB is an EXCELLENT movie, and hands down 'The Best of The Rest' (except for that stupid scene with the giant worm living on the asteroid....)

But... come ON, guys!  ANH was, is, and always shall be both a classic and a masterpiece!  It is one of the best movies ever made, it has a depth that the others lack, and the embryonic filmmaking techniques of the 1970's actually contributed to a more story and character-driven flick than it would have been in Lucas had been able to distract you all with eye-candy like he did in the last three films.

And yes, I just watched it again.

Alpha Dog is in the HOUSE!!!  (But he needs to go out...)

If you were gonna tell me that the new one is better than IV, I'll give you the (dubious) benifit of the doubt.... I haven't seen it yet.  Having been disappointed with the comic-booky feel of the last three, I'm not holding out for a whole lot with this one, but hey, it may be the greatest movie.... EVER.

Nah.

Nah.

Nah is right. It was probably the more in-depth dialouge and more subtile manuverings in the book that the big screen can't convbey, but I wasn't impresses. ANd Natalie Portman shows for once and for all that her looks are all she's got. ::)

Maybe in this movie.  I've seen her in other stuff where her acting really impressed me.

I yelled out 'Not so clumsy and random now, is it?' at the end of that one.  The hot girl next to me giggled.

Smacking the Emperor around like a little girl only to be killed when someone he thought was an ally opened him up for a lame sucker punch does not qualify as 'owned'.

'Screwed' would be a far better word.

But then, it was Samuel L. Jackson.  Treachery or extreme luck would be about the only way to kill him. ;D

Heh heh.

OK, my ranking (excluding Ep3, which I plan to see tonight)

The Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Attack of the Clones
Return of the Jedi
The Phantom Menace.

None of the later films brought the sense of magic that the first one did.  It will always stand out head and shoulders above the rest in my memory.  But I thought Empire told the best story.

It's hard for me to rank anything below Jedi, because for so many years there was so much I hated about it.  I hated Endor.  I hated all the battle scenes both on and off-plant. I hated the re-imaging of Han Solo as someone he wasn't in the first two movies, when he had been my favorite character in those two.  And I really, really, loathed the Ewoks.  Lucas made my opinion of the film worse in his special edition, when he added a huge party at the capital as if the war was won.  Come on!  You killed Vader and the Emperor and you made friends with a bunch of wittle Teddy Bears.  There is still a huge empire out there.  You think the Imperial Government is going to just roll over on the captial?  You think there aren't a few military commanders who think they should be the next Emperor?  I always thought the war would drag on for many more years.  (And I enjoyed Zahn's novels because he agreed with me.   ;) )

But, the Jabba scenes were excellent (OK, I mostly mean the Leia scenes) , Han was still Han early in the movie, and the confrontation between Luke, Darth, and the Emperor was outstanding.  The only good thing about Phantom Menace was the outstanding final lightsaber battle with Darth Maul and the two Jedi, and one sequence does not a movie make.  So Phanton Menace takes bottom honors.

I think I liked Attack of the Clones a lot better than most people.
