Mac OS X Tiger
« on: May 06, 2005, 05:28:09 pm »
This is a mostly windows community, given the games that this community revolves around.  However, there are a few in here like myself that prefer the sweetness of Apple.  Anywho, Apple released new version of it's Unix based operating system, called OS X (10.4), otherwise known as Tiger.  I've been so happy with it, I thought I'd post some pics to share with all, who might not otherwise be interested.
I decided to show some of OS X's more glaring features.  Sorry, you'll have to scroll down to see the pics.
First is Exposé.  Exposé is hard to explain, most people need to see it to understand.  In any event, Exposé is designed to let users navigate a computer full of windows quickly and easily.  By hitting the F9 key(like in the first pic) the system scales back all windows open on the computer to be selected usingyour mouse, or with the arrow keys.  F10 does the same as F9, but is limited to the program you are currently in.  F11 (the third pic) pushes all the windows open on the computer to the sides of the screen to give you instant active access to the desktop.
My favorite, the fourth pic, is Dashboard, which is at default F12.  Dashboard holds mini programs for you to access quickly and easily without having to go through menus to find it and launch it.  It's great for little things, such as finding recipes, checking the local weather, etc.
the final is Spotlight- the new search feature for OS X.  I used the simplest form of spotlight which originates with a menus from the top right corner of the screen.  Simply put, spotlight searches for items matching yourcriteria as you type (i.e. the more you type, the more items are whittled down until you find what you want) in you folders, programs on the computer, and even in your documents.  In short, EVERYWHERE.

Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine, and I'm pain free, you jab another pin,
Jab another pin in me

I'm about to install it at home. I'm taking the opportunity to clean up with an archive & install. Must do a good backup first ;)

It's too early to sacrifice my work machine on the alter of early adoption:
1) Cisco VNC is reportedly broken. No update for a few weeks
2) Virex & Norton AV won't run on Tiger. I know there are no know Mac viruses in the wild, but those dang MS macroviruses...
3) Virtual PC has some networking probs with 10.4
4) Some reports of Entourage corrupting attachments. MS will have an update out "soon"
5) Apple just released 10.4.1 update to developers.  Late May release anticipated.

IMHO Microsoft would be in some real trouble if that OS ever made it's way to the x86 platform.

The mac OS, ever since OS X was released has been a growing jewel for apple.  For some reason, though, people don't know about it.  Tiger is just the latest version, and man is it sweet.  I wish I could show you all how nice this thing is.  I agree though, Javora, the only thing holding back PCs is Windows.  If this OS worked on a x86 platform, it would be something to behold.

Its a real shame.

I would be willing to try it if it could run on x86. I'm simply not going to buy a machine from the only vendor in town for something exclusive.

When I'm done with all the uni nonsense and don't need my pc for anything critical I'l be trying out various Linux distros. (using SuSE 9.1 ATM).

I have heard that the latest KDE sports some very nice visual effects - some compared it to OS X. I'll reserve my opinion untill i try it out.

At the risk of trying to push you, a couple months ago, Apple released something called the mac mini.  It retails at $500 starting out, has an extremely small footprint, and is supposed to work with just about any USB keyboard, mouse and LCD monitor on the market.  It also comes loaded with software to get you running on basic tasks right away.
Check it out, if you like:  http://www.apple.com/macmini/
