Have a router, and  it is a nuisance.   I'll be hooking it up again in about two weeks.

Got Norton 2005, adaware, AVG running at this time.  The more the merrier, right?

Porn?  Why would I waste time on that?  Those sites are infested with one thing, and I have more self respect than to demean myself in that way.  Besides, like you, I  am married to a beautiful woman and don't need it.

I update every week now.  I don't take chances.  I am also fixing to get a DVD drive, and add a new video card so I can play some newer games, like SHIII.   Can't do it on my current set up, so I'll have to get the DVD and card so I can do so.  Still shopping around, and yes, I am well aware of Newegg, and like their prices.

1. Get a router - there's nothing like having any incoming packets you don't request, dropped, to discourage hackers.

3. Install Lavasoft's Adaware, and update and run it any time your system so much as hiccups.

I haven't had a virus in years.

Allow me to emphasize get a good router, I've seen some that should be called switches instead of routers.  Oh and don't buy a switch to protect your system either.   ;D

I would also suggest installing Spy-Bot Search and Destroy as well.  I've noticed that there are some things that Lavasoft and Spy-Bot will catch that the other won't.  So I suggest both.

As I said above using Adaware and Spy-Bot is a good thing so in that respect the more the merrier is correct.  However using AVG and Norton together and the same time is asking for trouble.  Antivirus programs usually don’t play nice together and IMHO is just asking for trouble.  If Norton is stable for you, I would uninstall AVG, and stick with Norton.  Also set your Norton to auto update, so far it doesn’t steal enough clock cycles to worry about.  Hope this helps.

Firefox.  Firewall.  Router (preferably one that does NAT).  Anti-spyware apps if needed.  Any time your system starts acting wierd - scan for spyware.

Dont open attatchments unless you were expecting it.

Use a non-standard email client if dl'ing via POP3 or IMAP.  (Or get a freemail one, or 50.  I reccomend Gmail).

Hey Jav-

I am running a firewall router (I think I asked you about it recently  ;) ), but I just uninstalled my Norton Personal Firewall.  I just got tired of Symantec's stuff.  So far my CPU (a hot one, a socket 754 AMD Athlon 64) seems to run maybe a degree or degree and a half cooler.  But would you recommend putting up another software firewall, even if the router does the job?  If so, you got some brands in mind?

Boy, I miss the old DOS days when Norton Utilities was one of the best products on the market.  It rescued me from nonbooting HDs at least a few times.  And, it used to allow you more power to examine and manipulate your HD and files (remember FileCompare or FileDate?... all gutted out by Symantec) without being invasive like the current versions.

You know Ed, except for that one incident where Trend Micro released that one bad patch that messed up my system.  Their Internet Security package (PC Cillin Internet Security 2005) has been pretty good.  It is really easy to work with when it comes to games.  The only thing it lacks (and the only thing Norton is good for IMHO) is the Ad/Pop-up blocking feature.  So if Ads/Pop-ups bother you, then you may want to stick with Norton.  Otherwise since you are playing games you might try PC Cillin.  On the other hand since you already have a subscription with Norton you could stick with that until it runs out then switch, it will save you a couple of bucks.  But I understand where you are coming from, I hate Norton, they have gotten worse every year since 2002 and I don't think I will ever go back to them.

If you are using more than one computer on a single router you might want to continue using a software firewall.  Who knows what your kids may get into.  Personly I don't feel the need for a software firewall as this Netgear hardware firewall is really good, thus I have shifted the brunt of my security to the antivirus program where I feel it belongs.  But with more than one system on a single router (used by your kids) your milage may very.  I hope this helps, but as tired as I am I'll be lucky if it even makes sense.  Good night.   ;D

I have two gmail accounts.  Nice and roomy.   I doubt I'll ever use all of it, but better too much room than not enough.

How do you burn something to a CD as a data disc?  I am trying to figure out how to move DIVX from my online computer to the offline one.

Dumb question number 1482:  Is it possible to use a DVD disk on a CD drive to burn info to?  The reason I am asking is, takes up a lot less space than doing it the other way, and would like to know before I spend money on DVD's for that purpose.

Interesting question.  First, you can never just use a DVD disk, it has to be a DVD-R or DVD+R. (The R can be replaced with an RW).

DVD's themselves as far as I know don't burn overall.

As for will the DVDRs burn in a CD drive...depends...

if that CD drive just happens to be a DVD/CD burner/writer than yes...

Not to be confused with just a normal CD burner/writer

But a normal CD drive won't even burn CD's.

 ;D

Wow.  I do look stupid here, don't I?  I know it had to be DVD-R/+R or RW, I was just wondering, due to the large amount of storage space on them compared to typical CD's.  I am learning, just going bit by bit, Dash.   ;D
