Go see it, it is NOT controversial at all and a very good movie. Long but I promise that you will not be bored.  ;)

I have seen it and agree that it is worth seeing.. A very important message for those looking for the kingdom of heaven and haven't found it yet.

Well....it's long. But:

* Storyline was very interesting, if simplistic in parts
* Dialogue was very simplistic and obvious
* Cinametography was spectacular
* Costumes were marvelous
* Very, Very violent

Performances:
Liam Neeson: magnificent, as always, considering he had insipid lines

Jeremy Irons: superb - had a more interesting character to work with

Edward Norton as King Baldwin performed the entire movie behind a silver mask and still delivered a wonderful performance with a lot of emotion.

Marton Csokas (as one reviewer put it) was a walking sneer. He plays the bad guys exceptionally well - if one dimentional. No difference here. Perennial Bad Guy.

Eva Green: Not even one dimentional - she was wooden - she has one look "sultry".

Ghassan Massoud as the Saracen King Saladin was powerful and terrific. Sort of a "Kapow!" kind of perfromance. I hope to see him in more western films.

And finally ORLANDO BLOOM: How did he do in his first leading role? Much Much better than the other movies I've seen him in. He can play "brooding" very well.
He still doesn't have a great range - but then this epic doesn't demand one. As I said - the dialogue was simplistic. But he was fine - he didn't let the movie down. But as far as I'm concerned, he is not "there" yet. I still think he's getting there - but he's no Jeremy Irons yet.

Ridley Scott made his point that there is never a "right" side. All fanatics say that "God is on their side".

My review? 3.5 (maybe 4) stars out of 5

I didn't care for this movie at all.  Very poorly written imho.

Did anyone else spot DS9's Dr. Bashir (I can't remember the actors name - el Siddig?) as Saladin's sidekick?
  I thought there was a great film trying to get out, but failing. When I saw the trailer back about February,  I was counting the days until release, Ridley Scott doing a Crusades epic, what more could I ask for? Well, a bit more than what I got, as it turns out.  Maybe my sky high expectations set me up for a disappointment.

Faddill el Saddig or something, and yeah I noticed.  My friend picked up on it first. "Is that Bashir?" lol
