Looking at SFC2 & SFC2:OP, whats the difference??
« on: April 25, 2005, 11:43:41 pm »
I am looking at buying SFC2:EAW or SFC2:OP, what is the difference??
I know OP came out after EAW, and that originally it was meant to be an expansion to EAW, but blossomed into a stand alone.

So does that mean OP has all the ships and races in it, same as EAW PLUS some more or what?

I have read in many posts that OP is considered the best out of all the SFC series, why?

And also ran across a game called "Starfleet Command: Neutral Zone", is this an expansion for SFC or SFC2??

I have seen all the awsome looking mods out there made for SFC2:EAW and SFC2:OP and they look great, I'm just not sure which one to get.  Well,...truth be told I'll probably end up getting both, but can only get one at a time so gotta decide between the two.

I'm sorry if these are stupid questions, but I've searched literally a hundred online stores, but none of them really give a really in depth view of what the difference between them are.

Thanks,
 Jim

Not stupid questions at all...

Currently...SFC:OP is the pinnicle of SFB based SFC gaming...

OP is the current standard for Dynaverse 2 play online...

Almost every misson script has been ported over to OP from SFC2...OP has more weapons and an advanced era (x-ships)...

Firsouls OP+ mod adds thousands of ships and hundreds on models to your game (also available with no models for a smaller DL while still fully compatible)...and OP+ is the base most campigns are built upon for online play...

Example if I may....while I have two EAW disks in my collection I havent had EAW installed on my machine for well over a year...There is really no need if you have OP....

IIRC..there are still a couple EAW servers up....but I'm not sure how big the player population still is...

Hope this helps..

KBF-Crim,

Thanks, your post is alot of help I assure you, only one thing that I failed to mention in my first post is that I don't play online, not that I don't want to, but I live relatively out in the middle of BFE, and have no broadband choices as of this moment, still on the 56K dial up, so I am looking at the single player aspect of the game.

Is Firesouls' OP+ also compatable for the single player campaign??

And also, do you have a link to firesoul's OP+ mod??

LOL, .. and also you said:
"Almost every misson script has been ported over to OP from SFC2...OP has more weapons and an advanced era (x-ships)..."

What does that mean??  Do you mean all eras of ships from TOS thru TNG ??  If so, I must say,...WOW! Sounds fantastic.

Please everyone, I'm intrigued, keep the opinions coming.

No problem...

Advanced Era in OP would be sorta like TMP era...

While SFC used TMP era models for ships...the SFB based SSD's (ship stats) are mostly TOS era ships...

There are some great TNG mods however with everything from updated music to modded TNG ships and models...

Yes...OP+ mod works offline as well...

There is a connected forum that has all the download links for all the goodies...

In fact...if yoou have the time to devote to a DL or a DL manager...you might wish to get the enhancement pack from pestelance...it's a big package...but it litteraly has almost everything that is currenly available for Orion Pirates...

The campaigns have been ported..the missions have been ported...applications like Co-op ace allow for some really great solo practice...OP+ adds thousands of ships and hundreds of models...

There are even mods to give PF tenders and fighter Carriers to all races..

I'd have to say that even for premium offline play...OP is still the winner hands down...

GateKeeper.. look in the Enhancements sub forum in the Dynaverse 2 section.. there is an all in 1 installer I made called the OP Enhancement Package which will bring your game to the most current level of community standard.. it includes the latest patch, all the game file fixes available, over 300 mission scripts, over 40 single player campaigns, Modding tools, OP +, fixed single player component files, etc... this package, though not used by all I would like, will put your game into GSA/Dynaverse/Single player readiness in one shot.. only certain fun Dynaverse servers require installers, and those are usually Serious Campaigns..

If you are on Dial-up, you can still play on the Dynaverse, you just should not initiate the mission if you are in a hex with another player.. the other player should launch the mission..

Same goes for Gamespy Arcade.. you can play there, but not host the missions... But you can join in with any one else hosting.

Hope that this helps.

P.S. Everything in the OP Enhancement Package can be utilized in single player mode as well.. plus you have multiple options with the Enhancement Package.. such as Mod Chooser.. it holds Taldren Original and OP + plus up to 3 more Mods without need to have multiple copies of the game on your system...

Gatekeeper -

Don't forget about Universe At War - for OP.

see my signature for a description of it - It's a big download - and also allows for the SFB based games mentioned above..

Thank you, Stephen, for your opinion.  I am really chomping at the bit to get SFC2:OP in my grubby little hands so I can try Chris's mod, I'm sure it will bring me many enjoyable, sleepless nights. ;D

And of course, now that Chris is now re-doing his TNG mod for SFC2:EAW, I have to convince my wife that I NEED to invest in getting that game now too. ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome Stephen, with all the helpfull advice and opinions I've recieved in the short time I've been here, I'm sure my stay will be long, fruitful and enjoyable.
