This weekend hasn't been very productive as I am having to reformat/reload my hard drives after a virus definition update from Trend Micro brought my system to it's knees. I only found out
after I reformatted the drives that there was a fix in safe mode. The problem started over the weekend when I tried to check my Email. The CPU rate was at 100% and the system was basically locked up. System restore points didn't work because it didn't delete the definition file. The update affected only people with WinMe and WinXP SP2 which of course I upgraded to WinXP Pro SP2 a couple of months ago. Just in time for this update from H@|| it seems.
ZD Net stated that Trend Micro "promised to compensate customers whose computers running Windows XP Service Pack 2 were disabled by the update". Judging by
Trend Micro own web site and the lack of any open supporting links I'm not going to hold my breath. You can read more about the screw up at
Information Week. In the mean time I have a system to finish reloading and some nasty grams to write.
This may very well have been an isolated incident, but I'm not taking any chances on that. I maybe taking another look at Panda before this is all said and done. Anyway I thought people here should know about this in case anyone else planned on changing Antivirus programs.
