A silly Question
« on: April 24, 2005, 12:08:21 pm »
Cheaper than dirt used to offer them, but I don't see them there anymore- where can I buy MRE's cheap?  I like to keep one in my car for emergency situations, and if they're cheap enough they make a good take along lunch, or even dinner.  Especially the ones with pound cake in them  yummmmmm.
ANyone know?

But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?

NPR is a lot like NASCAR.  Two hundred miles an hour in a circle, and you end up right back where you started with nothing but lost time for the effort.

For even more, just type in MRE in Google.  You'll get loads of places that still sell them.  Happy dining.

Enjoy. ;D

Muchos thanks, that's not too bad, $5.17 per MRE, before you take into account shipping.  Still, it's a huge price leap from what cheaper than dirt used to offer- $44.95 prior to shipping.
I shall have to order me up some of these MREs.
Now I'm off to google MREs.   ;D

Clark,
You might want to ask around the local armory and/or Reserve centers. Lots of times they have to get rid of quantaties of them, and end up tossing em. Not all the time, but it's worth a shot right?

How'd you find this out?  So, basically just call up an armory and say "you got any MREs I can have?"  How does one ask politely for a freebee?   ;)

By simply asking.  Most times, the soldiers at a unit get them and toss them or give them away.  They'll usually spring a couple.  Of course, then the recruiter will give you a pitch.  ;D

My dad just retired as an E-9, we get them all the time.

And seriously, just ask nicely. If they ask how to direct your call or whatever, ask the unit Supply Officer. Just tell him you've heard about units in some cases not using all their MRE's and you'd like a few excess if they've got em.

Don't forget to ask them for a John Wayne, too.  Usually, they are harder to find than a ComRat.

A John Wayne is a can opener that fits on your key chain with a flip up blade for field use.  They are nice to have.

Oh yeah, those.  I think we called em P-38s or something like that.

You call them a John Wayne, you'll find most prior military know exactly what you are talking about.  I am now going to have to go to the Army Navy store and spend fifty cents.  Sigh.  I miss my John Wayne.

I believe I saw one of those from my G-pa's military days, which go all the way back to WWII.  Handy little guys.  I was never issued one while in the Army, know about it from my Dad and grandpa and their military time.

One warning:  Once you get one, you'll never want to be without again.  They are great!

Hmm.. we called those P-38's.  The John Wayne was a round, silver wrapped candy bar that came standard in all C-rations.

I guess each branch of service has a different nickname.  We always called the can openers John Waynes, because they were able to take apart a big old can all by themselves. ;D
