Can someone help... re: video drivers
« on: April 20, 2005, 08:49:23 pm »
OK, here's the problem. There's something screwy going on with my video card. What happens is, some of my games will abruptly freeze for an instant, then the computer crashes and restarts. This is extremely frustrating and I am unable to play KOTOR, NWN, Bridge Commander, or Silent Hunter III for very long because of this problem. After the machine reboots, it tells me the problem is 'a thread stuck in the video driver' or something along those lines. It does provide a workaround, although I can't play SHIII with the workaround in place and NWN runs extremely slowly. I haven't tried the other two, and IIRC it only happens with these four. It says that the proper solution is to get updated drivers for my video card, but ATI's website is no help whatsoever. My video card is an ATI Radeon x300. Please help-- these games are great for the short time I can play them before my computer frazzles out on me. Is there anywhere I can get new drivers for the video card that will actually allow me to play all my games without the damn machine crashing?

If any more info is required, ask and I will try to provide it.

Go to the AIT web site and get the 5.4 Catalist Driver.. Always go to ATI at least once a month for the newest drivers.

In order to get new drivers.. the simple thing to do is go to www.ati.com

after page loads, click the link that says "Drivers and Software"

Then Click on your OS.. for me it is Windows XP

Then click on Radeon..

Then click on CATALYST 5.4 Windows XP - Driver Download

Then get go to the middle of the page and get the 2nd DL in the grey area,, it should say, WDM, Display Driver, and Catalist Control Center... that is the one you need.. make sure to have all updates from Windows Update before updating your video drivers.

Here is the driver that is most current :

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-catalyst-ccc-8-121-050322a-022141c-english.exe

See if this works.. 36 MB

You don't overclock your videocard, do you? ;)

you can try omegadrivers.net.

I stress that these are independent drivers, not from ATi or Nvidia. However, I've never had trouble. But please, use at your own risk.

Nope, I don't overclock my video card. With the capabilities of computers these days, I don't really see the point of overclocking anything anymore. Back when we had to work with 66 Mhz Pentiums and 16 MB video cards.. maybe. But not anymore.

I'll try omegadrivers.net -- thanks for pointing that out, Ice.
