Psych question.... I think...
« on: April 17, 2005, 02:12:43 am »
Not quite sure how to phrase this....

Okay, you know the little inner voice pretty much every one has? How loud is it supposed to be? How much is it supposed to respond to? Is it supposed to sound like you?

The reason I ask is because the voice in my head responds to every thought or thing I say to the point it's socially paralyzing sometimes and it doesn't sound like my voice at all. Doesn't even sound like the same voice all the time....

It's a bit disconcerting and I....don't have a point of referance to know if it's normal or not. Just like when I found out I had to get glasses. Everything looked normal to me till someone pointed out that it wasn't. Soo...umm...

What's normal?

I'm not sure thats normal, and I hope you're joking here. I don't actually 'hear' voices at all.

Man, 'normal' is a state of mind... it's where you have everyone else fooled into thinking that they have more problems than you do. There's no such thing as normal, it's a falicy invented by magizines and models and moviestars... all of whom go a long way towards proving that people who are supposed to be the ideals are anything but ideal.

Everyone hears voices preaching doom and failure- you just have to realize that the only voice that matters is the one that is coming out of your mouth. It's tough to do- took me 6 years to get back out into the dating scene after the last miserable failure- but it's something that everyone has to do at least once.

I agree with J.C. there Brez, and as far as "voices?" I think we all have them, it's in our thoughts, I have a perception of how my voice is and it is in my thoughts when I think things out, and I'm sure other people think the same, is probably why most of us are shocked when we hear an actual recording of our real voice on an answering machine for example. When you think of memories with other people, does your mind remember their voices? Of course it does! I remember voices from SFC friends and foes alike very well from the teamspeak and campaign days. Doesn't mean I'm looney.  ::)

Now when that inner "voice" is out of tune with your thoughts and starts taking an identity of it's own, THEN I would think someone has a mental illness.

The psych "experts" have an internet dependency illness listed in the books now, most of us would fall into that category, I guess we should all be following life blindly and veg on tele? Of course NOT! Our minds are far more active than most people, and those psych "experts" can take their medical journals and shove it up their arse!

Ice: No, I'm not joking. I'm probably not phrasing it very well though.

"Now when that inner "voice" is out of tune with your thoughts and starts taking an identity of it's own, THEN I would think someone has a mental illness."

Umm.... can you define that?  :skeptic:

I know what my own voice sounds like. What I was trying to say is that do other people have a "voice" beyond what they just though that makes counter arguements to the thought you just had (well... most of the time) in a voice that doesn't sound like mine? I dunno. It's hard to describe.

I THINK (lemmie stress THINK) thatI know what you are talking about.

You're saying that it seems that you have someone/thing in there that's like an outside observer- not just you arguing with yourself, but someone completely independant of your persona jeering from the sidelines?

I don't know if I've ever had that, but I've definately had to deal with what felt like several 'me's' fighting for the controls. Not all of them were what somoene else (or even me, at the time) would have recognized as a part of my personality... but it was me.

If your name is Thomas Magnum, then you are probably alright having a very loud inner voice.

I know, I know. This is a serious discussion, but I just couldn't help myself.
Only in America .....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

You might want to discuss this With a Professional Brezz. My wife's Mental Problems came from Voices telling her to hurt herself awhile back. It's not something really that we can answer for you. But I'd rather you be safe then sorry. It also could be something Such as Stress, and I understand you've been under alot of stress lately. You know the Voices are just you Concience Playing Devils advocate, etc.

Stephen praying for you Bud.

dont worry everyone has the inner voices. i just hate when i get into arguements with mine , then i try to kick my own A$$.  the only time u'll have to worry bout them is if they start saying for u to do something wrong.

I say, if it bothers you, then seek help.  It sounds like it worries you, so I would.

self talk is natural, eveyone does it (at least according to what i been taught in my BehSci class).  So unless your self talk is advocating things that might be harmful to yourself and others then i would think it normal.  However If it is bothering you that much i would suggest you go and see a professional as they have far more understanding of the human mind than any of us on this board and will most likely be able to help you.
