Request....
« on: April 15, 2005, 04:46:09 am »
I'm trying to find some hull fonts for TMP and TNG ships.  Wouldn't mind finding the font that WZ uses.

Ok.  Now what I need is a tutorial on how to get that red border around the letters/numbers in the registries.  I'm using Photoshop 7.  I can't get PSP for a while.  No money.  But I have figured out how to warp the text in Photoshop to the shape I want it to fit on the saucer, but sometimes the text gets a little mushed at certain parts.  But I'm slowly figuring that out.  But what I really need is a tutorial on how to make that red border.  Any help here?

What i do is set up a second image file and place the text in red. then use my masking tool to pick out the areas i want to make black and fill them black then i cut and paist then text onto my texture and place it where and how i want it. For curved text i need to path the text at the very beginning of the process to a curve created to match the lines i want to match it to on the texture. Thats how i do it. Anybody else.

Yeah thats pretty simular to the way I do it.... although photoshop 7 doesnt come with a "type along a path" tool, so you are going to get that steched effect... the other way to do it... it to type each letter on a seperate layer then rotate and position as necessary.. its a long winded way of doing it but looks great.. photoshop cs and illustrator both come with the "typing on a path!" function.

As for the red border, I normally type the font in red, then just mask select the inner bit and fill it black  ;)

Thanks guys.  This really does help me alot.  You have no idea.  Now, I just need to get my hands on Photoshop and Illustrator CS.  Anyone want to know where they can get their hands on original, full version copies of these programs for under a hundred bucks?

Those sorts of sites are grey-market at best; at worst (and I think they're usually at their worst), they're selling you pirated stuff...

Actually, this site is legit.  My mom has checked it out completely, and she's in law enforcement.  This place doesn't sell the retail versions which you would normally find on the shelves.  This place sells OEM copies of programs, OEM being the software discs that you get when purchasing new computers or computer equipment.  Sometimes also they'll sell overstocked items from other places that are trying to get rid of their inventory.

These are actual full versions, not academic versions.  And yeah, imagine my surprise when I saw 3DS Max 7 there for that price.

What I'm planning on doing is waiting till the end of the month till I get some money, the order one of these products.  When it comes, I'll let you know what I get.  From what I've been told, you don't get the box or anything like that, but you do get the CD, which is an original, unused CD.  I'll try and scrounge up enough money as soon as I can and get one of these programs and let you guys know.

Ok.  Could someone give me a walkthrough using masking tools in PS7, or post step by step procedures for doing this?  I've been trying, and can't figure it out.  The only thing I can do is to brush in the black, but it looks really bad, even when I use a very fine brush.  I've been trying for days, but can't figure out how to do this.  Any help would be appreciated.  I'm still all new to this, so please take the time to explain things in detail so I understand.  Thanks.

Tried that.  Doesn't work.  It turns the background pink.  I know, very weird.  I'll try it again though.

Open a new document, set the background as transparent, set the font big enough so that the outer line appears seperate form the inner section... type the registry out in red... magic wand the centre.. fill with black... ;)

Im not sure about the masking thingy though... but try that...

I've actually figured that part, about using the magic wand.  You're right, I have to make the font big enough so that the outer and inner parts are far enough.  Only problem I have is that when I do that, I can't scale it back down correctly to where I want it.  In order to use the magic wand and fill the inner portion, the text layer must be rasterized, which mean it can't be editted anymore.  I guess that's not a problem.  It's just that there's gotta be an easier way.  I'll keep trying.

There's an easier way... :)

Use Pataflafla's tutorial on how to do the registries on a curved path.  Do the first registry in the maroon that you need with the stroke as maroon, and the center being matched to the hull color.  Move it around until it's where you need it.  Then do a second one, slightly smaller on the same path with the outer stroke being again matched to the hull color and the inside being black.  Move it around so it matches your first registry, and then size it a bit smaller so it fits inside the first registry.  At that point, your registry should appear to be black with a maroon border and appear to show the hull through the space.  Make sure that you do these as a vector, and all shoud be good.  ;)

That actually sounds a bit more complicated.  I downloaded a trial version of PSP9 and that actually allows me to edit the colors of the text to the way I want to, no fuss, no muss.  Only problem is I can't seem to figure out how to curve the text in PSP, and no, I'm not going to rotate each letter because my hand-eye coordination is extremely poor.

I finally figured out how to add the red borders in the registries in Photoshop 7.  I found out how to use the Stroke feature in PS7, and the results were perfect, at least in my opinion.  But I couldn't have eventually done it without you guys offering your help and advice, so I thank you all.
