Watching the 3rd new episode now . . .

Does anyone know how I can catch up on the last 10-15 years? Dying to know what happened to the rest of the timelords.

Probably the best way is to try various DVD places to get the past episodes...from what I had heard, the BBC lost interest in Dr. Who because they thought it too juvenile..

They play it on the local PBS station here on Saturday's at 11 PM..

Sounds right. A very big hiatus. I wouldn't say off the air but definitely out of production since...

Think Trek will take that long to come back?

Gah, and the Dr. quits after one season? I mean, I like the actor but c'mon. One season? Stating that he doesn't want to become typecast and the filming schedule was grueling. Grrrrr! I think it's bad to call someone up and say you want the part and not take a lot of that into account before you take it. I could even have accepted two seasons I guess, but I mean the doctor supposedly has only so many lives (yeah, he can always find a way I guess but really...) if they start a trend of folks just signing on to do something popular and then ride it into something else then that's a bad trend, imo. It's a bad thing to do for the fans. I guess we'll have to see how the new, new doctor is, I guess.

I do like the new stuff though, I think it carries the feel of the old show nicely while updating it, but I've only seen the first two, so... I've been a fan for a very long time though, my brother has every tape available I think, so we've watched them a lot and used to go to great lengths and kids to get the channel tuned in to a watchable level during that timeslot. I could have sworn that the last "new" episodes were in the latter 80's though, but then again I didn't get into Peter Davison as much, Tom Baker was my Doctor for the most part, and I never saw any of the Sylvester McCoy ones until my brother brought the tapes over, so I guess it was '93 when the series last aired.

Double E...I was stationed in the UK when McCoy was the doctor..he wan't bad..and Ace was pretty cool...the worst one was Colin Baker (not to be confused with the ultimate Dr. Tom Baker..who my wife met at the market in Bicester, Oxon...she was ecstatic for weeks....)...

If you ever get a chance, go to the museum in Liverpool...well worth the trip

Actually the actor did take it into account and told the BBC in advance that he would only do one season. They chose to hire him anyway. So I would not blame the actor but the BBC official who chose to use a temporary Doctor for the role rather than one who could be cast for the long term.

Really, I must have missed that. The stuff I read made it seem like it was a recent revelation after they decided to pick the series up for a second season. I feel much better then.

And I'll have to check that museum out if I'm ever in England. I've never been there, unfortunately. I had a chance when I was in high school, when I was in a vocal group and we had a choice to go to either London or Disneyworld. The vote came up in favor of Disney, I couldn't believe it. Stupid high school kids. lol.

The BBC originally announced it as if he had pulled out of future seasons then retracted it when he pointed out the terms of his contract. Terms which he had insisted on and they had agreed to. Only if you saw the follow up stories as I was lucky enough to have would you have known that the BBC screwed up.

The only thing I have found on it so far....

The Timelords (the female version being "Timelady") are extremely advanced beings who live on the planet Gallifrey. Timelords possess the technology to travel through time and space. For eons, they used this power to interfere in the affairs of other worlds, encouraging the developmment of Minyans ("Underworld"). The Timelords gave the Minyans their technology to regenerate. The Minyans forced the Timelords off their planet and went to war with them. After that, the Timelords vowed never to interfere with the affairs of other planets. They only watch as time progresses and thwart attempts at interference

Nah, if they had been hired, the tardis would have changed it's exterior to look like K-9 and they would hop out of his poop shoot to exit. There would be no Gallifrey, but rather the doctor would be from the future of man and part of a large time directorate stationed on Mars (where the doctor would have been born incidentally). The K-9 tardis would be armed with Photono Torpedoes and Phasic Cannons (the torpedoes would fortunately have an explanation for never running out in that the tardis has limitless storage space... or would it anymore?) The Daleks would now have ridges on their domes, and be honorabe beings that would form an alliance with the Doctor as he tried to find out who the real villain was that was causing all the trouble throughout time. Oh, and the doctor would no longer "regenerate" when he dies. It would turn out that the Doctor is a shape shifter (great for all those cool stories they would want to tell) and he was never really dead, but rather faking it and changed shape to a new form for convenience. Yeah, that's it.

btw, I'm gettin' kinda bummed about this doctor leaving. I think he might be my favorite since Baker, at least thus far. I am really liking the series, it seems to have a lot of the flavor of the old but updated. I'm shocked that someone is actually pulling off bringing back a series without totally raping what has been done before. I don't believe it's been done before, at least not in recent history, imo.

As far as what happened to the timelords, beats me. I guess the above explanation is probably the case, but I thought he said they were all dead, not just moved out of the house, and the planet destroyed. Guess I'll have to pay closer attention. I figured it was something that happened between the old series and this one, especially given that they didn't open the show with an old doctor changing into a new one (which they did with the FOX TV movie) so who really knows what's happened between then and now. He hasn't said which incarnation of the doctor he is, for all we know he could be number 11 or 12, I'm guessing it's not (they only have 13 lives, right? Been a while since I heard about it) but really any amount of time could have happened between then and now. I wonder if they are leaving room for some of the books and other adventures that contained to the FOX doctor (can't rememeber his name at the moment) to have taken place without actually going through producing them. I haven't read any, but I saw some pics of book covers and whatnot, and there were some audio adventures and online little animated adventures featuring him if I recall. I guess we'll have to see. I'm really enjoying have the doctor back though.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is Daleks sans Davros. The little saltshakers always seemed more effective before he showed up (I guess Tom Baker really did hurt them in Genesis of the Daleks after all), yet once the character got introduced they couldn't seem to have a Dalek episode without him. They were more fun when they were more dangerous.

Indeed, i did notice another article on the bbc website and it did say this:

As episode director Joe Ahearne explained, the Dalek confronted by the Doctor and Rose (Billie Piper) " is a monster for a new generation.""The Daleks of the 1960s and 1970s would not make the grade today," he says. "They would be seen as comical rather than frightening. We couldn't have that."

The new Dalek can also spin its torso independently of his head, so creeping up from behind is no longer an option. Its trademark "sink plunger" attachment also reveals a terrifying new function.

"We have taken all the perceived weaknesses of the Dalek and made them deadly," says Mike Tucker, the BBC model unit's miniature effects supervisor."
