Side project- calling all D2 vets!
« on: April 12, 2005, 11:05:52 pm »
This is about something I'm trying to put together for this:

http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php/topic,163354409.0.html

Who better to ask than from the folks who know it best :) I've played a few past servers (sorry I'm not on this one- WAY too many fleet issues at home to deal with recently) but I certainly don't have the background as so many here have. I realize this project is OP based, but I figure a whole background would sum it up better. Remember the days when OP was the unwanted orphan child? It's come a long way since then. Don't be too specific and please keep on topic here- no bashing alllowed in this thread please! So, a couple questions & I'll do a compilation:

1- What would you say has been the best improvement(s) since the release of D2?
I'm thinking along the lines of server rules, 'standardized' shiplists, different ideas tried out, server concept, whatever comes to mind. I need the concept name, and a basic explanation.

2- What were the worst experiments?

3- This will make you think a bit. I'd like a historical server list, including the game used. I hope this won't be too difficult, I remember a thread on this a while ago, but darned if I can find it :(

Thanks greatly- I hope you find a bit of time to help out!

Best and worst are likely in the eye of the beholder, but here is my take.

Best.  Destroyable bases and the elimination of the patrol bug, also the slot rule on RDSL setting aside an area of the map for only smaller ships.  The use of secret VCs is also a big hit with me.  If a SQL server ever gets consistantly  stable, Bonk'd webmap based ship purchasing where you can buy any ship that can be produced by that gameyear instantly rather than waiting on the shipyards will be at the very top of the list.

Worst.  Implementation of super ships on a server with regular ones, this being the Babylon 5 based ships with X weapons used on RDSL, and the DIP system of ship balancing, which was a nice idea in theory but never panned out.

The patrol bug was when a smaller ship disengaging from a larger one would always get a DV shift.

Still happens  ;D (although it may be more of a mission pack thing)

It used to happen every time

So technically it hasn't been "eliminated" so much as "lessened"

Really that's all you need to say..

Actually it was eliminated to the best of my knowledge, but sometimes other factors might duplicate the same effect, like when persons drop from missions  ;)

Nope
Coaliton was running players off during SGO4 and losing the DV shift.
Don't know that it happened during GW5 as we're just kinda stomping around everywhere so..

Anyway I've gotten this kinda off topic here so

1) Best Concept since D2 release?
Easy- Me. Perhaps not so much a concept as a sort of religious icon, a figurehead.
Perhaps, dare I say it? Even a deity of sorts. My benevolence is limitless, my wrath feared.
Truly I am some sort of messianic figure.

2) The Tutu.
-Although his cap is a close runner up.
Perhaps a tie tutu/hat

ONE of the ED patrols give the Patrol Bug.   Unfortunately, it's the only stable 1v1 in the pack.
Who'd thunk that Star-castling was the root of all evil . . .

Have to agree with Chuut here except for the worst - since I got to FLY one of "those" ships he's talking about  :P

the DIP system of ship balancing, which was a nice idea in theory but never panned out.

Unfamiliar with this one... a short explanation please :)

How succesful is OOB? I'm inclined to say very... I am at a loss to give it a decent explanation though  :-\
I know basically it limits the number of DN's, BCH's, Carriers, and specialty ships that can be fielded by any race.

Maybe a look at the GW5 ruleset sums things up with regards to how general rules have evolved. I've picked out some here that seem fairly common now, each one of these is a result of hard earned past experience...  (If anyone can think of anything else, it would be most helpful) :

Server settings-

- Zero (or same) Hex draft radius.

- Small map to encourage PvP meetings.

- Players may fly only one ship at a time.

- Line Of Supply
   - A LOS means a one hex wide line from a planet under your team’s control (hereinafter called a depot) up to the hex in question.

   - You may not flip a planet or a base hex to neutral or from neutral to your empire unless you have a LOS to it.

   - You must have a LOS to any hex in which you place a base at the time it is placed.

 -Disengagement

   - If you disengage from a battle with a live enemy player, you cannot take missions in that hex for 20 game turns.  If you were flying

an OOB or Specialty ship that particular ship is also bannned from the hex. Thus if you transfer the ship to another pilot after being bannned,

not only would you still not be allowed into that hex until the ban was up, but neither would the pilot that is now flying the ship you had been

in.

   - If your ship is destroyed by a live enemy player, you cannot take missions in that hex for 10 game turns.

   - If you are in a hex that is surrounded by enemy hexes then you cannot disengage. Stay and fight to the death

- Map Victory Conditions

- PvP Victory Conditions

- General-

- Draft dodging is not permitted. If drafted by another player, you must accept the draft.

- Forfeiting missions to move around on the map is not permitted. Mandatory missions must be taken.

- Always show common courtesy to all other players. Abusive players will be banned.

- A player's name may only consist of alpha numeric symbols (A to Z, 0 to 9). Players may use a hyphen ( - ) or underscore ( _ ) if they wish,

but use of any other symbol or character (Space bar, !, $, *, ], period, %, etc) can not be used.  These characters can cause server or server

utility problems.

- During some missions, a player's name may not be indicated on their ship. If you suspect you are playing against a human, type a greeting

(i.e. hail, in, hello, etc) in the chat.  All other human players are required to immediately respond with a text chat greeting.

- No avoiding missions you do not like by logging off then back on.

- When playing a game against the AI in a neutral hex, do not immediately run off of the battlefield map in order to run down the defensive

value (DV) of the hex.

- Fight or Flight. When in a mission with a human opponent, fight or leave. Do not lead your opponents around the map wasting their time. It is

recognized that there are many good run and chase strategies (saber dancing, plasma ballet, etc) but staying on the battlefield with no

intentions of fighting is not one of them.

- If you are having a bad connection and either dropping a lot or causing your opponents to constantly drop, we ask that you stop playing for a

while and try again later. If your connection continues to cause problems we ask that you confine yourself to an area where you will not

constantly draft or be drafted by other players until you get a better connection.

- If you die in a mission with a human opponent, stay until the mission is complete. Consider it a penalty for dying that you must stay and

watch the rest of your allies be destroyed, or the rest of your allies whoop some butt!

- Rule Harassment: Some of the rules will be difficult to follow given the nature of this game. Players are expected to do their best in every

situation. However it is not acceptable to harass other players about the rules. We do expect all players to help others become aware of the

rules. If you are having a problem with a player who refuses to follow them simply send your RM or ARM an email with as much detail as

possible. Please use screenshots (F12 key) to capture your conversation as evidence. Harassing a player because they are not following

these rules or for any other reason is not acceptable. Please remember that everyone is just trying to enjoy themselves and that this is a

game.

The patrol bug was when a smaller ship disengaging from a larger one would always get a DV shift.

Actually the "bug" is based on the single player side.. if you are outnumbered, disengage is the terms of the script... this meant if the AI had a bigger ship, you left the map and you got the win because you followed posted orders, AKA not a bug...

The D2 uses the same script by default and it is in the scripting SDK... Scripters would have to change the victory condition within the script to remove/change this to get desired D2 results.
"You still don't get it, do you?......That's what he does. That's all he does! You can't stop him! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!"
