How to Turn on ClearType for Better Font Display

Windows XP supports Microsoft's ClearType technology, which makes text display better, especially on LCD flat panel monitors and notebook screens. Try turning it to see for yourself whether you like its look. Here's how:

Click Start | Control Panel | Display or right click an empty spot on the desktop and choose Properties.
In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Appearance tab.
Click the Effects button.
Check the checkbox labeled Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts.
In the drop-down box, choose ClearType.
Click OK twice to exit the dialog boxes.

Neat, even on my cluncky old CRT it makes it look less harsh.

Tested on an Acer 1511L lcd screen (I think it was) - it made the text very fuzzy and hard to read. (on-board intel video). I could no longer distinguish bold from non-bold text, So it seems it is quite system dependent.

I have been trying it on my system for a couple of days now.  The ClearType font has made reading text a lot easer on my CRT (19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB).  Seems to work especially well when reading text on Mozilla Firefox.  Don't tell Bill...   ;D

If you are running XP, there is a Clear Type Tuner to enhance Clear Type for your system.. this is designed ot give the best possible Clear Type display for your system..

This utility is provided by Microsoft and is a power plug-in for XP

Also to use it online from the Microsoft web site without installing ...

The first link will install the utility and you can access it from Control panel.. it is also part of the XP Power Toys available from the XP web site.
