it depends on what you're most comfortable flying.  If you're a Rom at heart, I'd suggest SoS or SPQR (but SPQR doesn't exist ).  If you're Gorn, the GDA might be your style.  If you're Fed, you've got quite a few to choose from: F1AF, FPF, SSCF, and others I'm sure I've forgotten.  The KAT/KOTH fleet's the least anal in my opinion, and they seem like a fun bunch.  They're Kzinti/Mirak.  I don't know of any Lyran fleets, but the Hydrans have ahhh.... I've forgotten exactly what it's called... Royal Hydran Armada or something like that.  The Klingons have a few fleets too: KBF to name one.  If I've forgotten anyone, post em!!  If you're comfy at all of them (or suck for that matter lol  ) the GFL takes everyone.

GFL also supports many different RTS, RPG games in addition to the SFC series that was the founding game the group was built upon in 1999. So, there is a future after for you in the GFL after you get tired of SFC.  Although, that maybe a while.

GFL is also the only active gaming group to support serious dynas in both D3 and D2.

Here's the D2 one:  www.gfluniverse.net/d2/

Also remember that joining a fleet group is not necessary for playing on the DV2......we are allways happy to have privateers playing too.....

Flying different races over a couple of servers also lets you get to know more about the different fleets so you can find one that is recruiting AND fits your playing style and schedual....

Definately, as I'm an indie myself.  If I ever get good enough at one race to be considered good (and get a kill or two my own hull size!), I might join a fleet of that race.

Oh realy? I could have sworn XC has hosted servers in both.
And we are now hosting the SFC2.net dynas.....Hmm I must have been wrong.

XC also has people in RPG,FPS,MOORPG's as well.

I guess it depends upon what you are looking for.

Don't forget GDA for the Gorn types out there.

Others are:
Lyran: Golden Pride Fleet (GPF)
Hydrans: Royal Hydran Armada (RHA)
Klingon: Klingon Dark Slayers (KDS)
             Ministry of Kahless (MOK)

ISC: Not sure if they actually have a fleet name. But Karnak and Julin Eurthyr are both active Froggies. (who said that?)

To Recap:
Fed: 1AF, SSCF, 9TH, FPF
Romulan: SOS, SPQR (although they'll deny it)
Klingon: KDS, MOK, KBF
Gorn: GDA
Kzin/Mirak: KAT/KOTH
Hydran: RHA
Lyran: GPF
ICS: ?

Other fleets that fly just about anything including other games:
Galactic Foreign Legion (GFL)
Xenocorp (XC)

But like the others said, fly a few of them first then decide. Get the full effect or enjoyment before you decide/commit.

Looks like you will need to do some research on what group meets your needs and expectations.

Best bet is get all thier website links and take a look, most fleets keep alot of information on there for possible members.

GFL's website is in my sig.  XC's is www.xenocorp.com

I'd like to add the XTF, VSF,  11th, and NRS. 1AF and FPF are primarily D2 fleets(I think the NRS is still a mainstay on the D2 as well), while the others fly both D2 and D3.

BTW: whatever happened to TAG? Did they move to D3?

Didn't know MOK was gaming on the D2. I thought they were ladder folks.

MoK is (was?)  predominantly GSA-based, but they have been playing on DV2 to a small degree since Day 1.  A few of their members have joined the KBF and are now playing DV2 under the KBF banner.

KBF is the only Klingon fleet that is staunchly entrenched in Dyna play and is now also renewing its GSA commitment (I think we're currently ranked #7 with only a few guys taking part in the current GZ cycle.

Kewl beans, Dog. Some of us use to belong to an old SL fleet. We have a few guys who also GZ, like Cougar/Megafortress and Grraven. Was going to myself, but haven't made up my mind to.

SteelClaw....

...if you guys don't have enough guys to reasonably take part in a GZ cycle, I'll bet we'd be glad to have those of you who wish to take part hold down dual fleet membership, as it were, and join the KBF for GZ purposes.  We have just enough guy taking part to be competitive.  A few more might actually allow us to move further up the ladder.  Our overall win percentages are great...it's just that we can't compete in sheer volume of missions some of these other fleets are running.

Something to think about.

A bit late on the response here... sorry, I have been REALLY busy of late.... but...

Starfleet Tactical Operations Command is my 'fleet'.

We are  a bit more unusual then the other fleets.  Like the XC crowd, we encompass all races.

But we also run a virtual galaxy based on the pen & paper Federation and Empire game.

If you are not familiar with that, think Axis & Allies where we fight out the battles on GSA.

I encourage everyone to check us out.  It is kind of slow as each turn must be processed.  So a turn (1.2 month in game time) can take a month or more.

But hey, that is what the D2 is for, filling in the dead time.

We have several members that are also part of GZ or D2 fleets since our schedule more than allows for multiple commitments.

Just something to thing about.
