Smoothing and SFC
« on: July 31, 2005, 01:17:12 am »
Im a veteran modeller as you all know yet im confused about this issue.

Ive noticed lately alot of SFC models have vertex's welded  perhaps where they should not be. Mainly on wing or saucer edges. When i export a max model to .mod when the dialog comes up 'force smoothing thoughout entire mesh" i usually hit NO, yet my edge vertex's still wind up welded anyway where i intentionally left them unwelded. Screwing up the smoothing on the model, and creating wierd shading effects. Is there a way to avoid this short of moving faces furthur apart and risk creating gaps in the mesh?

Have other veteran modellers experienced this? and is there a fix?

Normally, i just autosmooth, and explode by smoothing groups

i usually autosmooth (or smooth manually depending on the situation) then when the project is done i detach the smoothing groups to the mesh.  the .mod file is picky over smoothing groups (ie it doesn't have any, just one giant smoothing group)  but if u detach parts to the mesh it fixes that problem.   hope that helps
