I have now started to rebuild my aging desktop syst and just bought a 2.53GHz mobo and proc.

The next items on my list:

Video Card*
Memory
and P/S

This will be done over the next several months.

*If the built in video card doesnt work out.

Eeek...built in. You're gonna wanna fix that.

Radeon 9600XT's still hold their own. If not, Nvidia 6600's rock.

Onboard video is nice for a bargain machine (or one for light use), not gaming or anything media intensive.

Ive got onboard vid on my 833 Duron, does OK for watching sub'd anime, but gets jumpy if i have ANYTHING else runniing but Bittorrent.

(Too lazy to install a AGP card - no need on the current PC)

Actually its not really gamers who drive the PCI sound card market. Certainly gamers are the focus of companies like Creative but the increase in FPS aren't really all that significant. With the latest VIA chip and now Creative getting into the on board market well there just not much reason to buy seperate sound card other than personal preference. I should also make mention of the nVidia solution on the Nforce 2 chipset call Soundstorm which is superior to alot of PCI soundcards.

On board video is another story entirely.

Today, i bought a P/S for a whopping $22.

Currently, I am shopping for a video card. and it DOES need to be under $100. (on a very strict budget). I have seen them as low as $59. -details will follow.

Any suggestions?

How many watts for that great price on the p/s?

Elvis, on the sound card, how 'bout folks who play CD albums on their rig? I mean some of the little speakers they hook up to their systems are better than the floor standing wood encased audiophile speakers I play my CD albums... why lie... I still play vinyl ! ! !... through.

Wow, PC3200 400Mhz 512MB stick of Ram only cost $59USD??!? I paid over $100USD when I bought mine a couple of years ago. Hmmm, it might be time for another Gb of Ram soon...

Yeah, Jav, I'm kind of surprised, too. I was shopping (only) for DDR333, otherwise called PC2700 RAM and for quite a while that was MORE expensive than the DDR400 or PC3200! I can't figure why, though; supplies dwindled, perhaps, for DDR333?

Another note: anybody interested in 250 Mb Zip drives? I saw a site selling it for $17, before any taxes or S/H. Even after these charges, it's still cheap. I've still got lots of SFC models and mods and patches and things on Zip disks... as well as CDROM; I don't know which is backing up which!

(I got one!)

Flash drives? I use that for more serious stuff, like if I can't download SFC models home and do it elsewhere, then I have a good way of transporting them home to the CDROM and Zip and home HD!

I still think Zip drives/disks are a good idea, as they're portable and rewritable and erasable and reformattable easily. But personally, I won't got for the 750 Mb version only because of cost and lack of backwards compatibility to my older 100 Mb Zip disks. The 250 Mb drives ARE backwards compatible with the 100 Mb disks.

Older RAM prices always jump up as new stuff comes out, that's because they cut back production to make more newer stuff. Happens all the time.

BTW, the Ram I got from Corsair XMS was $153 for a 512 stick.

Runs like a dream boat on clouds though.

Still, major league OUCH! I try my best never to get the latest and greatest version of any component for that reason. I like to stand behind at least one to three notches back, the chief aim being to save money.

For example, I still have to build a system for one of my boys. His brother got a Connect3D Radeon 9500 (alas, no "L" shaped RAM), a very good, if dated performer, at a decent price. This one, is going to get some make of the 9600 XT, as it is an "equivalent" (yeah, I know, it's really a bit better) card and is affordable. Who wouldn't want an X800 or 9800 XT or nVidia 6800? Unless you're rich or truly need the video speed, you're overspending for one of those beauties.
