New Windows Update Beta
« on: March 24, 2005, 09:13:16 pm »
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en

This version requires Windows Genuine Authentication Tool to be installed.. it prevents faked or stolen Windows OS to get updates...

It combines Office and Win updates into 1 system now..

If your Windows is up to date with the current Windows Update system, this new Beta will not find anything for you.. No new updates are out as of yet... however this will be the new system this summer, it is going to replace the current update service.. basically it is aimed at OS pirates.

Can we make it so that it doesn't update automatically, or will the Pirates of MS force us so that we have to accept whatever updates they feel our inferior minds need.

In otherwords, with the new updater, will we be able to pick and choose which updates we want like we can now?

Yes.. after installing the updaters from the new Windows Update, do the following..

open Internet Explorer, click on tools and click on Internet Options, click Advanced tab and uncheck the Automatically Check for Internet Explorer Updates.. click OK

Then go to Control Panel and click on System, Click on Automatic Updates and put dot into Turn Off Automatic Updates, then click OK.

This will make updating fron Windows Update manual..

However I have not ever found any update to break any application I ever had nor have I found any of my windows components work incorrectly, Except in 2003 with 1 security update for CD drives and security, that broke the Original SFC Single Player, however I soon posted a fix for SFC afterwords...

All other games worked just fine, it was only SFC to my knowledge that got broke with the update.

Hope that this helps.

I've found a couple.  They have updates for my motherboard supposedly (NOW THAT WAS A MISTAKE...TALK ABOUT LETTING SOMEONE FRY MY SYSTEM!!!!), then there was the video card driver update that they supposedly had, made my card stop working correctly, luckily I went to Ati's site and downloaded THEIR drivers that time, then there was the soundblaster drivers they wanted me to d/l, then there was Media Player 10 when it first came out (though oddly enough it works fine now).  Typically I d/l security updates, and disregard most of their other updates now days.

Sometimes in the past Microsoft--in an attempt to be a good provider--would host other's patches and updates. An update for your motherboard and your video card would be such monsters.

I have used 9 and then 10 from the beginning and never had a problem. In fact, the player I have embedded on my web page is based upon 9/10 specs.
