How do you get rid of a cat?
« on: March 23, 2005, 11:46:54 am »
Saber has learned the behavior of peeing to mark his territory from the dog, whoe is allowed free reign despite the fact that she does this constantly and several times a day.  I've tried locking the cat up at night and in my room during the day, but yesterday he took the liberty to pee on all my pillows, the bedspread a blanket at the foot of the bed, a pillow that sits on a chair in the room and somewhere else I have not been able to track down yet.
I've done all I can, does anyone know how I go about getting rid of him.  I'm not joking around here, so please don't leave any comments on maming or killing the cat.  This is a sensitive subject for me, so I ask whoever responds respect that.

But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine, and I'm pain free, you jab another pin,

If you have a Petco where you live, take him there and put him up for adaption. Or the Humane Society.

Those are the only good options you have short of giving him to the city pound (<------NOT RECOMMENDED).

This is a natural behaviour for a male cat, which tends to diminish or vanish if you neuter him.  I know some people have strong feelings about spaying or neutering their pets.  If you don't, and you haven't already neutered him, you might give that a try.

LATE EDIT:  I agree with the above:  do not give him to the pound.  (If it comes to that, just kill him yourself.)  The best option if you are dead set on getting rid of him, is to panel freinds and advertise in the local paper to see if you can find a known good home.

If this behavior just started to happen, you may want to take him to the vet first for a checkup to see if anything is wrong.

All male cats spray unless they are neutered.

Also, urine is acidic based and even though you clean it, you do not remove the smell for the animal, which encourages it to repeat the behavior in the same spot.   White vinegar completely neutralizes urine, and mimics the acidic nature of the smell of urine to a dog or cat.  It will discourage them from going in the same place, and proper training can make the animal (especially a dog) associate the smell of urine with YOU marking YOUR territory.

I trained a german shepherd once to think anything with vinegar smell was my turf, and then when he started to chew stuff, I'd put a little vinegar on the item and he left it alone.

I would go with having him neutered, and see if the problem persists. If it does(which it shouldn't, as a male cat normally loses his desire to spray at the same time he loses his balls, but you never know), see if a kitty-friendly friend is interested in taking him off your hands, and if not, let the Humane Society adopt him.

Just as an aside, there are 4 cats in my house, 2 of whom are neutered males, so I can sympathize with your position, CK.

Unless you are actually breeding your pets, you should have them neutered or spayed.

Anything less is being irresponsible.

Another thing I should add.  If you don't spay your female cat, you can risk it going into some type of terminal heat. (there is a real name for it, but that is how I interpreted it so it is what I remember)

My ex's female cat did that.  She was never spayed and around age 5 started going into heat every few weeks.  Then she was constantly in heat.

After one night when I damn near killed the thing b/c it wouldn't shut the hell up and we were on the 15th consecutive night of this moaning, the ex took it to the vet.  They did an emergency operation b/c it uterus (or what ever the cat version is) got infected and was leaking puss into the body thru the ovary ducts.

my cat is a little that a years old and the first time i did not know she was in heat, she was not acting like it and she got pregnant, now here baby are 6 month old and 1 of them who barely go out got pregnant, and her mother is again in heat and it seem to never stop, my 2 male adult are neutred and the never mark there territory, once i get the money i need to get her neutred so she will not be in heat and have more kitten (7 cats is enough).

Neutering is the best solution.  Plus, it'll prolly make the little tyke more cuddly.

Our cat, which we had for 15 1/2 years (Chairman Meow), started urinating in strange places.

I only wish I had taken him to the vet sooner.

The vet gave him some medicine to clear up an infection of some sort and he quickly started using the box again.

However, he soon got sick again and sadly perished.

ASK A VET!

Also, there are some pretty good products for removing the underlying urine odors left after normal cleaning.  I don't remember any brand names at the moment, but spend the $15.  Once they have used a spot, they will continue to use it.

None of this may apply if this is due to an issue due to having an unneutered pet.

True, and I did forget that... cats die of kidney problems/failure more often than anything else.

90% of all male cats that get neutered never again spray to mark their territory.  There is also a feline version of aids, and if you don't get him fixed, he will find a way to get out and get a little action, which could result in you losing your pet.
