Personal modifications to SFC3
« on: March 07, 2003, 12:32:22 am »
I've looking into the way SFC3 works, taking in a few things here, reading all the .txt files and I found out that I can modify the game. So I do, but then as soon as I go to a single-player skirmish to try out my modifications the game just shuts down and won't work properly until I restore all the settings back the way they were. Why is this? Is there a way I can get around it? It's not like I'm gonna use the mods on D3, seeing as I never go on there anyway. I just want to have a Sovereign loaded with type 11 phasers and all Quantum torps and a defiant with pulse phasers and quantums. Is that too much to ask?

Dunno.  SFC3 is quite picky.

Try downloading Chris Jones' TNG Mega Mod.  It adds like 30-40 new ships to the game (brand-new models, complete specs) including a Sovereign with quantums and type-11 phasers, and a Defiant-class with pulse phasers and quantums, and even the USS Defiant with a cloaking device.  Not to mention an assimilated defiant and voyager...

And it even comes with batch files!  Double click on Orig.bat and it puts in the standard specs, so you can play with unmodded people.  Double click on TNGMega.bat and it puts in the mod specs so you can play on your own or with other modded people.  I'm even hosting a dynaverse server for the mod (requires the patch, the mod, and all the mod's updates)

You can modify certain files like the .gf files and the specfile. What program are you opening the file in? Excel doesn't work well following the instructions for previous versions of SFC. Wordpad works well. Just be careful if the window comes up with the "always use this program for this ...file?" and the box is checked -the checked box will mess up the file associations and confuse the game exec file. Also stray characters or spaces or a misplaced colon will mess up the files. While you are learning it may be best to make one small change at a time and testing to see if the program still works. The modding forum is the place to go if you have questions of this type. That is where people who have done or are doing what you are asking about hang out.
