BSG question
« on: February 18, 2005, 10:13:26 pm »
I have one question I'd like to know about the series after watching tonight's episode:  is the cylon god really some non corporeal being, or just some supercomputer version of the cylons with some neato tricks to make tall blonde chicks disapear.  Personally, If I were god and were to perform a trick, I would have made the tall blonde a 5'0" asian woman.
CK

But tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or fix this hole in a mother's son?
Can you heal the broken worlds within?
Can you strip away so we may start again?
Tell me, can you heal what father's done?
Or cut this rope and let us run?
Just when all seems fine, and I'm pain free, you jab another pin,
Jab another pin in me

No one really knows what the Cylon god is like.  However, Ron Moore has been quoted as stating that the Cylon path of worship is largely based on the radical terrorist Islamic teachings than any others.  :)

Only thing worse than a machine that thinks like a human.....is a psycho machine that thinks like a human...

frag that.

Also, all of the next three weeks episodes continue to build on what we saw in this one.

Oh, and did anyone else get squeamish when Baltar and Gaida were having the bathroom conversation?

Ok...I'm going to go out on a limb here...

Not only is the cylon god Man's god.....but in trying to become human(because they are the children of man)...the cylons will in fact corrupt themselves...where as they where in fact perfect.....they will become imperfect...

The best weapon the human will have against the cylon...will in fact be other cylons...

As the cylon adapts to humanity...the human adapts to exploit it...

"While there is nothing logical as a machine...there is nothing cunning as a human....

We remain the top of the galactic food chain..."

You can quote me on that....

I agree, the Caprica Boomer Cylon would be the best bet for that (based on all 13 episodes).  However, that's all for Season Two, which according to Ron Moore, will explore the Cylon culture and agenda a LOT more than they did this season.

Woohoo!

I also agree with the Garden of Eden analogy...where the Cylons were indeed perfect, they corrupted themselves and forced their own expulsion from the grace of their God.  However, I believe their God is not the human God of Earth, or the Lords of Kobol for the Colonies.

He will be Baltar though.  :)

If you go to the BSG site on Sci-fi.com you'll find a gallery of ships.  Click on the viper and there's a 'CAG Roster'.  It lists all available vipers as of the fifth episode.  It current reads:

Vipers in Service:  26

Down For Repair:  13

Pilots on Duty:  21

That hasn't been posted yet, but I'm hoping they'll have one soon.  We do know that there's at least five operational Raptors as of the same episode, though.

What I like is that the Raptors are also a light bomber.  They can affix Nuclear-tipped bombs/missiles for delivery against large targets.  Sweet all-around multi-purpose ships.

I have a few BSG questions.  I have read some on the site, but didnt see the first few episodes of the miniseries.

1.  Is the Cylon chick inside of Baltar's head, or is she transmitted from somewhere else?  If she is transmitted from somewhere else, doesnt that mean the Cylons know where they are?  If inside his head, how did she coordinate her efforts with the physical Cylon chick who accused him of treason?  Seemed like convenient timing to me.  Also, there was someone aboard the pax ship they destroyed early on who was accusing someone of treason.

2.  Are Cylons bio, or mechanical?  Do the human looking Cylons have an inside like the Terminator, or are they flesh and blood?  The ships look bio, the human/Cylons look human, but the centurions look mech.  If flesh and blood why do they glow when they do it?  Wouldnt that give them away?

3.  Boomer.  Wouldnt the chief notice that she glows when she does it?  Who wrote the word 'Cylon' on her mirror in her locker?  Her presence aboard gives the impression that she made it clear through flight school.  How long have the human Cylons been around, anyway?  Also, why do they want poor old Helo to do her, anyway?  Is it DNA, needed for maybe a new human/Cylon?

4.  Was the physical Cylon that accused Baltar of treason real, or imagination?  Is she still on board?  They said earlier that humans cant live in the water tank.  That opens alot of possibilities that the Cylons could hide in all kinds of places.  If imagination, once again the Cylons know where they are.  If they wanted them dead, wouldnt the Cylons just convince (via illusion) the officer of the watch to push the self destruct button?

Some comments:

-  They cant fill all of the Viper AND Raptor cockpits for a maximum effort.  Trouble there.

-  Seems like every week, the show ends with someone letting Adama down.  Apollo, the Chief, Starbuck, the security Chief are all examples.

-  I like the 60ish flavor to the show.  The civilian costumes, the presidents ship, and the Galactica sets seem that way to me.  I like the music, and I like the NYPD Blue'ish camera motion and angles.

-  Where is Athena?  Did Muffit get to see snow yet?

-  I gotta get a life.   ;)

Answer:  SHE CLAIMS she's a chip inside of her head.  Whether she is really there, communicating with cylons in the fleet, etc, we do NOT know for sure.  My personal opinion is that the likelihood is VERY high that she really is a chip and has a limited-range communications capability with nearby cylons.

They are biological constructs artificially engineered by the toaster-models.  Look at the bio-mechanoid nature of the cylon fighter, and um, minor spoiler- highlight to read, but when we get to see the inside of the base star it also is bio-mechanical.  They are NOT human though because of the radiation exposure we saw in the last part of the mini-series.

We don't know how long they've been around, but 10-15 years is most likely, in my opinion.  The glow is only when you're looking at her back, and you'll notice that the cylon females only do it in positions where the person screwing them CAN'T see their back.  Why they want Helo to do her is answered by Episode 13, and I'm not going to spoil it for you.  Trust me, let the answer play out for you on screen.  It's worth it in the end. (Also, one of the things I believe the Cylons want to know is if a HUMAN could love one of them.  It follows on the analogy of the Human/Cylon relationship being akin to Parent/Child.  The child always wants affirmation that mommy and daddy loves them.  This also adds an Oedipus-style relationship to the whole equation that is downright...nasty when you think about it.

I'm voting real...and probably hiding somewhere on Galactica or another ship.  Galactica may NOT have a self-destruct device, and she already tried to seduce Adama...and failed.

Which is why Starbuck is training the flight-certified candidates.  Look back at the episode where she's assigned the task. There's three other flight instructors in the fleet, and they are teaching ground and flight basics.  Then Starbuck teaches combat tactics.  There's more on the way because yes, this is a HUGE problem.

Yep, it's a drama about human failings.  Also, have you ever seen someone let the 'old man' down on a naval ship?  It's the worst feeling in the world.  Plus, Olmos gives 'the look' so well we squirm in our seats every time we see it. I know I want to do a better job after he gives that look...

The Galactica is retro-designed.  The first cylons used computer networks to disable or destroy early colonial ships in the first conflict, so they went low-tech on purpose.  Imagine an enemy who can tap in on all your wireless communication signals (cell-phones, radios, etc), who can infiltrate viruses into all your network computers (navigate you into a sun, overload your reactors, etc).  Since no one had heard from the cylons for decades, the colonies had moved away from that tech, reestablishing computer networking and so on.  The Galactica still used the old tech though, and is all that is left.  That's why the set design is very much sixty's retro.  As for costumes and so forth...they do fit the setting quite well. A lot of people hate the camera motion, but I've gotten use to it now and really start to enjoy it.  In Episode 10, The Hand of God, it really pays off as they go on the offensive against the Cylons.

Muffit doesn't exist (thank the Lords of Kobol).  Boxey only appears in one or two early episodes (but does nicely in my opinion).  Also, Boxey is the son of the Officer killed by Number Six on the Armistice Station at the very beginning of the mini-series. (The officer puts a picture of Boxey and his mother on the desk when he arrives and later Boxey mentions his father is a colonial officer who was declared missing.)  Athena doesn't exist either.  Adama didn't want to raise a girl.  He had two sons and a son-in-law, uh, I mean daughter-in-law (Have I said lately that if there was any woman I might mate with on a regular basis it would be Starbuck?).

He reminds me of the man who was Captain on my ship when I first reported aboard.  Everyone loved him to death, and he had maybe one or two Captain's Mast hearings per month because no one wanted to receive 'the look' from him, or hear 'the words' that he said (usually something like "Seaman, you've embarrassed the United States Navy, the entire crew of the Long Beach, and ME.  I thought you were better than this.").  He was also known for using the little-used bread and water punishment to really get his point through effectively.

For minor problems, he'd just give 'the look', shake his head very slightly, and walk away without saying a word.  Then the next time we pulled into port, your duty section would be the first one up, or your division would be the last to receive Liberty Call.  It was just expected that would happen, just as if you were the BEST on the ship, you would be the first to go on liberty (usually as soon as the ship secured from Sea Detail and the gang plank was lowered.  He wasted no time getting his best sailors on liberty as a reward for their hard work.)  Under his command, that thirty-year old ship with the oldest weapon systems in the fleet outperformed every single ship in the fleet.  Our nuclear reactors, the first ever built for surface vessels and the first to go to sea among surface vessels, outperformed the newest reactors on the newest carriers, subs, and surface ships.  Our weapons systems, built thirty years to sixty years earlier, outperformed the newest weapons on the newest ships in the fleet, every single time.  Aegis ships had to suffer the humiliation of having a ship with SPS48/49 combo radar, no Aegis systems, and old 55 Bravo directors shoot down every single target at maximum range with skin kills while they missed proximity shots a few times.  Our gun crews put more rounds on target, and maintained longer rates of sustained fire with manned gun mounts built BEFORE World War II while their brand new automated gun mounts put out fewer rounds, hit less often, and couldn't maintain the rate of fire we achieved consistently (thanks to some marines inside the gun mounts).

When he left, every thing went downhill, quite literally.  Our new Captain was 'new Navy'.  Every division was held onboard if any division messed up, liberty was taken away as punishment and NEVER given as a reward, and he didn't have the 'look'.  Truth be told, he was so bland that you could never tell what he was thinking, whether he was pleased or just always...tranquilized.

ORSE scores plummeted, weapons systems qualifications fell to 92% (which he bragged about, not realizing it was DOWN 7.2%), and so on and so forth.

If we had been a battlestar, and the colonies were just destroyed and we had to depend on someone to get us through it all alive, we'd have done anything for Captain Pollock (the first C.O.).  Olmos has playing that sort of commander down pat, and is a joy to watch.

Guys, don't just ask me a question about this show.  You can ask Ron Moore himself and he'll likely answer.  Go to the message boards at Scifi channel's website...make an account and post in the Questions for Ron Moore thread.  He really does go through them and answer them regularly, even some I didn't think he'd give an answer to.  I haven't seen someone so high up in the creation of a series discuss things like this with the fans since JMS and Babylon 5.

edit:  Here's the question(s) I put on there...

Quote
Thanks for showing us how much you care about this show beyond what we normally see from the studios. Not many people at your level have taken the time to answer fan questions like you do.

The Sci-Fi Channel has put up a roster of Vipers (as of 105) and their current status. Is there a similar list being prepared for the Raptors (my favorite craft of the series).

On a side note...how does Boomer keep getting all the hot ECOs to fly with her?
