GameSpyArcade software is adware ridden
« on: March 05, 2005, 08:56:57 pm »
Those of you who use GSA arcade software be warned:

It is ridden w/ two files that are adware. Both of my programs Zerospyware and Microsoft spyware programs  >:(

did not detect these two files:
Aphex.exe
ArcRes.dll

The only program that did was Norton Antivirus.

Note: NAV needs to be updated to detect said files.

one other problem Aphex.exe is intergrated into launching GSA >:(

I'm looking at replacing gamespy for EAW, OP and SFC3 with a webpage and plugin to call the exe with the correct command line parameters. (proven in concept and command line parameters tested,..) Guaranteed to be spyware free. GUGS is working on a similar solution for multiple games and I offered to share my work on an SFC game matching page with them. (I'll share it with anyone who's interested). Just need to find the time to do it.

We'll still need gamespy ID's for D2 login though... (for now...)

I had the same issue with Norton and Gamespy.  Norton tried to quarantine those files and I ended up having to reinstall Gamespy.  Now when I tried to play Neverwinter Nights in multiplayer after the reinstall, I have to use a different sign in name.  Reseting the .ini file in Neverwinter folder had no effect.  At this point I'm fed up with both programs.  Somebody needs to put the heat on these two companies in a very big way.

BTW Spy-bot also recognizes these files as well, but instead of deleting the files it just alters the registry to disable the program files.  However when you run gamespy or a multiplayer game that uses Gamespy the Ad ware files become active again.

Umm, you do know that Gamespy's main launch file is the file being detected as Spyware.. and again, you do know that with a registered account (I have lifetime for $20 right after Gamespy bought out M-Player (M-Pig)) that you have the ability to turn off the Ads in the Configuration.. AND that the only Adware that it is running is the in Gamespy Browser Advertisements... A registered account will allow you to turn this off.. thus no longer Adware.

Back about 3 years ago, we had a online system called M-Player.. basically GSA only a lot less stable.. GSA came and bought out the Northern Hemisphere portion (M-Player Arabia is still going)...

all SFC games were transferred to GSA, which at the time, was still in Beta.. they stated it would be a par for system to get rid of ads and to enable some of the system's options using your Email address to verify your subcription.. they stated it was a monthly fee.. but for those using M-Player at the time (mainly SFC players), they offered a $20 lifetime membership to GSA...

If that offer is still valid or not, I don't know.. you will have to PM an admin of GSA to find out.. most probably email their CS or Billing department to find out... However I have not seen anyone get a $20 lifetime membership with GSA in over 2 years.. only lifetime memberships by winning tournaments...

Now if you are paying your monthly fees to get rid of ads, go into Gamespy Arcade, click on Gamespy in the Menu, go to options.. then go to subscriber features, click on Verify My Subscription Status, then click on Advanced under Subscriber Features, and put a check mark in Disable Full Screen Ads... then click OK.. this will turn off the Ads or what others call Ad-Ware.
