Question about the Sovy
« on: February 26, 2005, 03:45:34 pm »
I'm not trying to stir up trouble ..  but I have a serious question about the Phaser array on the top of the primary hull.  Ever since I started building the AAC (which is based primarily on the Sovy hull)  I've kind a been wondering about the placement of the array down in the back side of that sloped section.  Wouldn't that make it tougher to target ships?  I have moved it in my model of the AAC  because of where we placed a "raised" area" like you would see in a Miranda class.

( I have been doing a paper mache model ..  and it's almost done enough where I can post a WIP)  ...  right now it leaves something to be desired.

At any rate .. this thing about the phaser placement has been kinda buggin me ..  thought I'd see how some of the rest of ya who have been modeling longer felt about this.

Over all I still like the Sovy ..   that is aside from this one particular item.  This is intended to simply be a discussion about the placement of that one phaser array.

thanks.

From the looks of the Sovereign Model on Nemesis, they are raised.

I've noticed this before on some models....it seems to be different from model to model. Sometimes the area where the phaser array sits seems to be level, sometimes it's on a slope down towards the middle of the saucer!

looks as thought we may have stumbled across something.  I'm certain that others hace discussed this in the past .. And for good reason.

As I indicated though this is not ment to be a bad thing .. just to see if others noticed it too .. or if it was just me !

thanks guys !

Well then Buzz if just to save money, Paramount "resized" the base station from ST III then it definately merits a new design. Obviously if the Enterprise barely fit and the Excelsior fit ??? NOT, how one earth would a galaxy or soveriegn fit throught those doors ???? I will also agree it makes absolutely NO SENSE   to have a base with only 1 or 2 exits. Talk about a bottle nose cluster f@@k. Any ship inside when an attack occurs is toast. Can ya say Pearl Habor ? IMHO any future base design needs multi exit ports.

those large starbases probably are only placed in secure areas. I'm willing to bet they would have had shields and defense systems had one been attacked in the show. Most of the distance shots we saw were to far away to see any phaserbanks or torpedo tubes, and the door related equipment would likely prevent them from being placed near the doors. The thing probably has planetary grade phaser cannons that retract when not in use. Not to mention the sensor net it has. Anything small enough to sneak through wouldn't be a threat to the base and probably easily delt with by patrols. It's also probably that primary vessels are not kept in the starbase for extensive periods unless nessecary, and I think the enterprise only entered such a base once in TNG, to undergo a rapair proceedure that would leave it unable to respond to a threat anyways.

uhhhh  you guys lost me ...

LOL ..  this is a thread on the location of the phaser arays ..  not the Fed Starbases.

For what ever it is worth ..  MP you are exactly right ...  both are really  ( to a point).

Part of what got me thinking about an emergancy situation was the new Reman ship .. its cloak was nearly perfect and hard if not impossible to detect.  If you had to scramble several ships out in a hurry ..  you're toast.  And yes MP you are correct ...  Pear Harbor all over again.

AT any rate ..  if anyone has any more observations on the positions of the phasers on the Sovy's primary hull ...  that would be cool!

 ;)
