Squadron Commander PF Floatilla's
« on: February 16, 2005, 02:12:35 pm »
I just wanted to bring this up again since I enjoyed it so much.... :)

I think it would add a twist to a campaign to have a cluster area on the map that has too many navigational hazards for big guns and limit the area to frigs, destroyers, and PF floatilla's....

AND limit the floatillla's to that same area so they dont effect the greater campaign.....

Toss in some token VC's....

That would rock... 8)

I like this idea.

No PFs would be in this server, but it sort of fits with what you are talking about.

Chuut put me onto the idea of a Gorn/Fed sever, in which Arena went badly and the war broke out.  The more I toy with it, the more I like it.  (Might or might not happen this summer; I'd still like to run EcoWar.)

An idea I had was to start the center of the map with lots patchwork hexes owned by Gorn and Fed, representing the initial confused territorial claims.  They'd be surrounded by a ring of neutral hexes that can't be captured.  (I think I have a DB tool to make this possible.)  Within this ring, nothing larger than a DD or maybe CL would be allowed, since any ship bigger would draw the attention of the Metrons.  (And that's never good for the captain and crew.)

About half the VC points on the map would be inside this zone, and about half outside it.  Cruisers and early DN's would be free to roam outside the zone.

Gee. If you're going to look at ARENA and it having gone bad, well the gorns in ARENA had the sames phasers AND torpedos. Want to strip that plasma off the ships and load photons?

The idea, which is basically the same as the SLOT from RDSL iirc, was one of the features of that campaign that worked well and was well liked.

Does indeed sound like a good idea to bring back up.  Thanks Crim. :)

You never really see the Gorn ship-to-ship weapons in Arena.  You just see the Enterprise shake a lot and Sulu say that shields are up.  (Those plasma torps the Romulans fire in The Deadly Years could be mistaken for photons too.  Where were the big fireballs from Balance of Terror?)

In any event, I might tweak Star Trek history a bit here and there to get a good scenario.  But I'd never blaspheme SFB ship design.

It doesnt necessarily need to be right now...

But I'd really like to try this concept out in a campaign setting.....like to fight over mining belts and launch hit and runs on asteroid bases, or local commerce, ecsorting mining and transport vessles, running patrols in asteroids...basiclly any type of mission a WW2 PT boat fleet may have been useful for...

It's really just a selfish request...I miss flying mutliple ships....and I really miss the big fleet battles that came out of SFCoC...the system was a slight pain...but my god...the battles where glorious...

It was what I was weaned on....not single combat...more like an FFA in a field of roving death  ;D

I'm just a greedy little klink....I really REALLY want to see ALL the toys in as a baseline for every race...including Fed PF's...and let admins restrict them out as they see fit...

Whatever Dizzy is onto with his error free list seems to have helped stability quite a bit....I guess I'm hoping someone can get your PF tricks to work on a regular server...and we can restrict them to a small area....

I still hope for the day when we have the means to get the DV working just the way we'd like....so that speacialty ships draw special missions...trigger other special events....shipyards enforce OOB ....economies work...etc...etc...

Then ALL the toys can be played with in some logical manner and be used in the functions they are intended for... :)

A few of us many years ago flew in a campaign system where we were not only allowed to fly 3 ships but it was highly recommended.  We were allowed to have squadrons of up to 9 ships, therefore requiring us to fly 3 wingmen with 3 ships each.  This was vs up to 3 wingmen with up to 3 ships each.  This 18 total ship battle would most times actually only last 4-15 minutes.  It is amazing what ship combos work best.  We were allowed only 2 dreads per 9, and had to have 1 heavy per dread.  The remaining ships would be light or frig.  Biggest combos were 2 dread, 2 heavies, and 5 lights/frigs.  If there were no dread then you could have up to 3 heavies with 6 lights/frigs max.  You could however field a fleet of 9 light/frigs if you wanted.
We had loadout maxes as well.  if fighters, the best available at that era were allowed.  if drones in early, 4 loads.  if drones in mid or late, 3 loads of the fastest or 4 loads of slower speed.

Another one we did  had a max of 6 ship combos and was fun as well. the rules were fairly similar by comparison.

Both were not on dyna, but on a map where we sent info as to what  we were building in ships bases etc.  the battles had to be flown within 3 days of contact, all on gsa.  Quite different from the dyna system but it was quite fun too.

Roger that D...

SFCoC (StarFleet Command online Campaign) was one of the few rough campaign systems used for SFC1...is was cyberboard based with all moves done via E-mail and the battle resolved on M-player...

The Dynaverse 2 made the system almost moot...as the inherent advantages of the D2 still outwiegh the advantages of a wargaming system based on mostly PvP...
