Positive Community Spirit (sort of OT but not)
« on: February 15, 2005, 08:13:12 am »
I thought I'd share this with all of you in light of some of the tensions we've experienced in the d2 world lately.

Something interesting happened to me about a month or two back, shortly after my hiatus offline due to RL circumstances.  I came home and found a message on my phone from one Stephen AKA SirGod.  He'd been browsing past posts and caught wind of some of what I was going through over last summer, and thought he'd call to see how I was doing or if I'd like even someone just to talk to.

I had sort of hoped to run into him during the past campaign to thank him personally; that had never happened before and I think I was kind of stunned by it.  After all... this is just a game we play, I'm just one of the quieter pilots who lives somewhere in this big/ small world we all live in with problems just like any other person...  or is it really?

No, not really.  I received OP+ as a gift from Hooch, and have had others even offer to send me a headset for TS (  :banghead: Constant work in progress, I sort of sound like Charlie Browns teacher right now).  I recall clearly one day when KRolling came to a TS channel I was alone on to say hi and see how I was doing; although I couldn't reply at the time it really touched me too.

It sounds brief in the telling, and I'm not sure I can really explain how actually hearing that made me feel - part of something bigger maybe; but definitely part of a community.  Because of the nature of forums, a lot of posts have some negative aspects in any setting, so I thought I'd share this ray of positive light with you all.

Thanks SirGod, wherever you are, for making me feel less alone during a low point in my life, and thanks to you all for making me feel at home here.   I doubt the forum will let me give you the karma you deserve, so for now this post is all the thanks I'm able to give.

+Karma to All, take care.

 :goodpost:

I joined this game and these forums (which I initially thought were silly) so that I could play online an keep in touch with Scipio and Agave and a couple other old friends from high school that dont play much anymore.  Like you Paladin, I eventually found myself enjoying ithere as part of this larger community.  The KATs took me in and made me feel special, and the rest of the community as well.

I look back at those roleplay posts I initially considered silly and I realize that some new player is looking at many of my posts the same way  :P  I just hope I can help welcome this player as i was once greated with open arms,  Perhaps you were the one  thinking my posts were kinda dumb ;), well whether or not you were welcome, and I hope to see more of you posting in the future if this is an indication of the stuff you will be sharing with all of us.

And this, Constant Readers, is why we do what we do.

SirGod is like that.

When we made the post regarding accepting donations for the DGA fund drive, SirGod called me at home to make sure I was doing okay.

He's awesome, and we're glad you and him both are here.

There is no doubt that this is a special group. From my own experience last year visiting the USA, being put up by Dank, Chuut, Jeff and J'inn; Scipio's (and Dr Nyet) guided tour of Washington, meeting Agave, C-Los, Crim, Green, Kvet & Warsears, not to mention Mav hopping on a plane to Washington on the spur of the moment; all prime examples of this community spirit.

I may not be playing the game at the moment, but I still feel a part of this.

due to my situation I got on line for something to do, little did I know that I would find an group of guys like Bearslayer,Chutt,C-Los,Jeff and Ted and others that not only make me laugh but find I miss talking to if something goes wrong with my ISP or my machine.

as it turns out we have become a family of sorts around this game, and its the people that have touched my life that keep me playing this game, people I call my friends, people I will probably never meet in R/L that I care about, its more than a game now its more like and on line home.

Thanks to DM6 and Mog for the mention.  It is truely a honor to call you my friends  ;)

Five years ago, my work had suffered a slow down.  During the summer, Carlos (C-Los) and I were taking turns working only 4 days one week, and 5 the next.  My roomate had moved out, so I was paying the $800 a month rent for a 2 bedroom apt with the utilities and a car payment.  Things were pretty tight to say the least.  But I had just bought a new computer and EAW.

I had plenty of time to play obviously, and that ended me up as the first Federation RM.   With the interaction that came with that position, I made several friends, many of which still play.  Too many to list....  Now, I've been working 6 days a week, 9-10 hours a day for the last 18 months, so I'm doing much better financially.  So, I guess I could say that during the bad, and good times of my last 5 years, SFC and the wonderful family of friends I have has been here with me, for which I am gratefull.  ;)

Yes I too have found many warm feelings here, just recently Krueg had to jump in as RN on the latest server. he came up with a plan of attack.

I found him in the great hall meeting with a bunch of other KBF captains to discuss the plan. I shoved him in the chest and told him his plan was a pile of targ crap, he broke a mug of bloodwine on the side of my head and told me if i had a problem with that i should kill him and become RM or shut the hell up.

I picked up a chair and hit him in the face with it. War Sears tried to seperate us so I hit him with what was left of the chair and told him to mind his own business.

Krueg had gotten up by then and found his own chair which he broke over my head.

Mazeppa said he shouldnt have hit me from behind and punched Krueg in the mouth.

Sears told Maz to stay the hell out of it and hit him in the stomach with a table.

I  was on my back on the floor when Krueg jumped on top of me with some weapon he kept hidden on his uniform and stabbed me in the shoulder.

I pressed an agonizer I had disguised as a belt buckle into the side of his neck and threw him off me into the wall.

Maz had taken the table Sears threw at him and smashed it down on Sears foot.

Sears had fallen to the floor and kicked Mazs feet out from under him.

Maz went down and  had slammed his head into the stone floor.

About this time we all found ourselves bleeding and out of breath.

I levered myself up and grabbed two mugs of bloodwine off a table and staggered over to Krueg who was pointing a Disruptor set to stun in my general direction. At least I think it was on stun.......Anyway.

Siting down next to Krueg against the wall I handed him a mug of bloodwine and asked him if he thought I could get a DXDm when they came out.

He told me to stop bleeding on him.

LOL, how does Sirgod know everyone's phone number.   ;)

Only person from this community I've ever talked to outside of e-mail and voice comms was John Vaughn when he was going through a rough time in his life.  I wish he was still around....

Great post Paladin! Five years ago I took a new job and I am sorry to say it was a mistake. The last few years have been tough, but this has been a great place to meet and make friends. I would have gone crazy (or perhaps crazier) if not for you guys.

Agreed John Vaugn was a good guy, I was sorry to see him have to leave the game for personal reasons.  He is missed as others that have left for varying reasons are as well.

 :goodpost:

Well, I've been proud to be a member of this community now for several years.    The competitive comraderie is fun as well as the people who make up this community.   The common interest in this game is a nice way of getting to meet all the different pilots and their interesting personalities.

As Chuut alluded to above, I was first introduced to SFC by my lifelong buddies Scipio and Ujinn.   From that point our close group of friends starting playing EAW on the Canada West servers.   On our first few servers we all decided to help boost the Gorn numbers, and thus the GDT (Gorn Dragon Templars, or least what I'm calling it in public) was started including me, Scipio, Chuut, Ujinn, and DocPyscho.    We all had such a blast.   Not only could we play SFC together, the computer simulation of SFB and F&E that we all played earlier in our lives, but we could stay in touch better now that we were separated and living in different cities on the US east coast.

Time marches on.   Ujinn and DocPyscho don't play much at all anymore, but I still love being a part of this community.   Since my induction in the GDA fleet, I truely think I have found some kindred gaming spirits in the other members of our fleet.   Through all the servers and flying for several different empires, I have enjoyed having spent my time flying and talking with all the different people who make up our community.

I would truely be amiss is anything ever happen to our SFC community.    So, I urge everyone to keep one think in mind.   We all love this game, and the opportunity to compete against each other.   As we have "friendly discussions"   ;D about OOB, shiplist, fighters, etc., that we all remember why we are here in the first place.
