My status...AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!
« on: February 09, 2005, 01:46:49 pm »
Well, finally got my new puter working somewhat ok. Have MAX ready to go and PS. :) Unfortunately, I lost quite a bit in the move from old puter to new one...somehow the damn cd=rw got corrupted. >:( Also, new puter running a little hot. Either the mobo sensors are way off, or I need to pop out the cpu and apply some thermal paste. I'm using Motherboard monitor and it shows cpu socket 73C, diode -1C and case 0C. Found out AMD processors run hot anyway, but I want to nip this in the bud so the thing last for more than a year. :P ASUS has an updated BIOS that should help with the sensors, more accurate, but I hate messing with the BIOS. :-\

Anyway, I'll be getting going on something soon, just wanted y'all to know I was still around.

BTW, new puter is:
AMD Sempron 3000+ (Athlon XP 3000+)2.0GHz
256mb DDR
17" flatscreen CRT
Radeon 9200 128mb

Since I know jack about modeling, all I can say is that's a respectable rig you've assembled there.  It ought to be pretty fast and still be usable for quite a few years to come.

Enjoy it!

you shouldn't worry if you have a asus mainbord they have live update for your bios ... shouldn't be any pain involved ... except perhaps some mentel destabilising but thats ormolu when trying to do something that you usually do very often
... and BTW when you buy an asus mainbord the first thing you should check is a ewer bios build on there site ... they have a thing with them from reason... don't know why...
any hoo good luck in your indever

And then their was a scream like no other in the universe

i would suggest you upgrade your cpu fan.  73 C is a bit hot.  my 3.2  p4 runs at 38 C idleing and 45 C underload.  OCed it runs 48 C idle and 55 C underload, and its pretty much common knowledge that P4s run hotter than amd ;) so either ur mobo is liein to ya, or your stock fan really sucks.

Whoa!  Sandman!  73 C ??!  I missed that!  That's way too hot!  I know the max temp tolerance for Athlon 64s is about 70-75 C, AND I STRONGLY SUSPECT ATHLON XPs OR SEMPRONs HAVE A LOWER[/color] TEMPERATURE LIMIT!!!

As Tus said, put another fan in there, and quickly!  You will radically shorten the life of your CPU.

if i may make a recomendation the JET 7 is a great CPU cooler keeps my 1800 at around 37 degrees  and is speed adjustable and since it is a blower fan there is no dead spot in the center of the cpu like with normal fans

Well, I've been all over the net, and the consensus is that AMD runs higher voltages, which translates into higher temps. But, ASUS has released a BIOS update for the A7V8X series...but, my specific board, A7Z8X-LA isn't listed. One of the things this update corrects is the temp. sensors faulty readings. It has to be the sensors...on the BIOS screen, in hdwr monitor, after a cold startup, it's registering 58C. :P I'm trying to find out if I can use the update for my board. Also, I went to http://www.pcpitstop.com and they identified a lot of programs that were running in the bkgrd that were ok to close out, cutting the load. :)

BTW, I'm planning on getting a 512mb ram stick to add, making total 768mb. :P Then I'm gonna do a HIGH poly model. ;D

YUP ..  I agree ..  I put an extra fan in also.  I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to the tech stuff ..   but I DO know that heat and electronics don't get along too well.  I also beafed up my power supply.

Yeah, I'm gonna get a better fan. I also think some of it might be the Asus pwr control settings...fan barely running before I turn on MBM (Motherboard monitor), then ramps up full speed. Here's a look at what it says...

Know you understand why marky needs to get promoted at work, just to pay for all that hardware. By the way good luck marky, not that you need it.

OK, ordered a new fan/heatsing kit from http://www.coolerguys.com, so I'll let y'all know how she does after I install it. AMD is so confusing...Semprons are listed as Socket 754, but mine turns out to be Socket A. Seems that they took Athlon XP's and adjusted some things then re-packaged as Sempron. Very confusing. :-\

For anyone with a name brand computer with an AMD CPU, I would suggest you replace the heatsink/fan and replace the stock thermal plate with some thermal grease. Save some headaches. ;)

OK, well, got the new fan/heatsink and installed...still running at 73c socket, -1c diode and 0c case. AMD lists the critical temp as 90c, but the thing still crashes when playing FL and reports a critical error. I can model though without crashing, so all is not lost. :P

OK, got the new cpu cooler in, a WhisperRock IV from Spire, and temps still at 73c. So, as per advice from an AMD tech forum, I have to wait for some Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound, then uninstall the cooler, clean old crap off, re-apply new stuff (paper thin, too much will insolate the chip and fry it :-[) the re-install the cooler...if that doesn't work then I have to pay for a $69.95 (US) BIOS upgrade and HOPE that clears the temp problem. Jeez I hate technology. :-X
