Idea for future "Stealth Rules"
« on: February 01, 2005, 09:28:09 am »
1.  Write all the rules in a Word Document.

2.  Zip this doc up in a Password-protected zip file (or some other secure media).

3.  Email this ZIP file to the RMs.

4.  When the conditions have been met, relaase the password.

I already told someone long ago what would happen when Organia fell. I didnt make any of it up. Will that silence the conspiracy nuts who think Im making it up as I go? Nope, prolly not.

Preception is reality Dizzy, the sooner you reside yourself to it the better. Until we learn to trust each other around here these types of precausionary measure would be a good idea. Not your fault for not realizing it ahead of time, but something admins should consider for the future.

U know whats funny? I was WARNED this might happen... Hehe, by the very person I entrusted the secret to. Course, you know me, I can deal with pushing a bad situation... And deal I have been. However, I didnt think possible how much peeps would be freaked out over such a small thing... Amazing really. I almost feel like apologizing cuz I shoulda known so many folks had a glass jaw when it comes to roleplay and mid server 'mini-surprises'. But I aint. :D

People trusting each other?

That use to happen in the precusor of these forums - ya know, Taldren?

Back in my days.. person could just say 'This was already in the deal' and peeps would believe it!

I think it's a solution. It's a solution for all those people who expect people to try and pull shady stuff.

Take a look, that which we hate most in others we often hate because we see ourselves in them.

Does anyone really believe that Dizzy just made this condition up on the fly?  I don't, and I didn't think anyone else did either. Dizzy,  I have no problem believeing you wrote this condition into secret rules from day 1.

I didn't think there was any lacking of trust going on here.  I rather thought the anger was over the fact that rules were being changed, with no notice that such a thing was possible.

When you are walking along a path with someone, having a conversation about scotch and chocolate, and suddenly you stick your leg out and trip them, they get mad at you.  It doesn't matter if they are your best friend or if they don't really break any bones, they still get mad.

It's just human nature.  And in virtually all of life's situations, it's a goood trait.

DH's idea is a very good one.  It gives people advance notice that a midserver rule change is built into the server.  They don't know what it is, but they know it might exist.  It lets you know you are in a role-playing type environment, where you actions may change the aspect of the game you are in.

I guess advance warning is a good thing. But I mean, in this instance, with 5 or so ISC players, the Alliance take 25 VP's a cycle in exchange for the ISC getting to go after the Gorn.

WOW! What a big deal. This whole thing is so blown out of proportion...

I think it's the principle that's rankling people here Dizzy- if it's right to change the rules of a server mid-campaign, there's nothing to say that, for example, if a future server saw the Coalition getting the upper hand that it would be acceptable for the Alliance to fly nothing but DNs and battleships, with the Coalition being allowed nothing bigger than a CA.

This particular mid-camp rules change might not seem that large from your persepctive, but it will set a precedent, a bad one, that it's acceptable to change the rules of a campaign in favour of a weaker race. Simply put, I think some people are worried that you and other admins are going to come out with more little stealth rules like this in the future.

You hit on another good point Scipio. It isn't so much about flat out mistrust, as that tends to be limited to a few extreme individuals on both sides, but rather about the fact that it is important for admins to be cognizant about managing peoples expectations. A little more upfront communication would serve us well in the future.

1.  Write all the rules in a Word Document.

2.  Zip this doc up in a Password-protected zip file (or some other secure media).

3.  Email this ZIP file to the RMs.

4.  When the conditions have been met, relaase the password.

I'd suggest a PGP encrypted email with the key being released when the rule is revealed... (or a similar solution).

As far as Die Hard's idea, I like it, only I'd consider just posting the password protected file link on these forums, then posting the password here in these forums for all players to see as soon as they saw it.

As for the Zip File stealth rules that are password protected, I can use Install Creator to put the document in and lock the installer with a 128 character key if necessary... There is no keygen for Install Creator documents.. plus Install Creator has 3 forms of Locks.. I can build Keys based off Email Address or User Name or both so each RM get's a specific key for the file that they have..

that way each side could have specific rules or each race could have specific rules and no one could open any rules until the Server Admin hands out the Password to the RM.. this would promote the use of the Race Specific Forums over at BozoBits, or even prompt building Race Specific Forums as Child Forums here in the D2.
