Server list is (still) empty...
« on: February 01, 2005, 04:04:41 am »
My wife bought me a used copy of EAW for Christmas and I've just now gotten around to working on getting it set up for multiplayer.  After much pain, I finally have my firewall set up, the new WON server file set up, and my account on Gamespy created.

After I get logged on, though, there aren't any servers listed.  Are there really no EAW servers running, or have I done something wrong?

No, there really aren't any EAW servers.  We're all playing OP now.  There are OP servers running pretty much constantly, with a "serious" server running about 1/3 to 1/2 the time.

I checked the EAW server list and it shows two EAW servers running. Battlezone and Stray's Tavern.

It can be found here: http://www.dynaverse.net/go.php?id=56&source=downloads

Also make sure you have the latest patch (2036): http://www.dynaverse.net/go.php?id=13&source=downloads (2002-2036 from CD, if needed, install before directory server fix).

I completely reinstalled just to make sure - both the 2002-2036 and the WON patches are in.  Firewall seems to be set up, as I don't get a firewall message, and it takes me to the "Campaign Selector" screen.  Just there is never any servers listed.

One funny thing too is that once I get to the campaign selector, clicking the "Back" button on the top of the screen doesn't work any more.  I have to ALT-F4 to exit out of the game once I get there.

I noticed in the WONServerSetup.gf file there is the following section:
Code: [Select]
[RTI]
//IPAddr = "0.0.0.0:1234"
IPAddr = "209.69.154.13:2601"

The IP address given (209.69.154.13) doesn't trace and it can't be pinged.  Is this supposed to be my IP address?  I tried replacing it with mine, but to no effect.

As far as the directory servers, I am assuming the mini patch has the latest:
Code: [Select]
[WONDirectoryServer/Addresses]
0=client.sfc.dynaverse.net:15101
1=client.dynaverse.net:15101
2=sfc2.directory.stasis.ca:15101

Any other suggestions, or am I just out of luck here?

The RTI address does not matter.

Ah, "Firewall seems set up"? Game locks up at serverlist? Try turning your firewalls off.

If that does not do it, give the list a bit (can be slow sometimes) try refreshing it a few times (with a good long pause between each).

I can't turn off my firewall.  Well, I can, but won't.  My whole house is behind the firewall.  I use it for NAT for all my computers - have 3 for the kids, 2 for me, etc.  I'd have to take all my kids off the internet and just hook directly up to my cable modem.

It looks like it's a firewall issue after all.  I reread Ronin's post on getting set up.  Here is his firewall setup:
Code: [Select]
47624 to 47624     TCP              192.168.1.???        X
2300 to 2400       TCP                192.168.1.???        X
6500 to 6500       TCP and UDP   192.168.1.???        X
6667 to 6667       TCP                192.168.1.???        X
3783 to 3783       TCP                192.168.1.???        X
27900 to 27900     UDP              192.168.1.???        X
6073 to 6073       UDP                192.168.1.???        X
28900 to 29901     TCP              192.168.1.???        X
13139 to 13139     UDP              192.168.1.???        X
6515 to 6515       UDP                192.168.1.???        X

2300 to 2400 and 28900 to 29901.  That's 1100 ports!  For DirectPlay games I usually just forward 2300-2305.  That is generally sufficient.  In any case, I tried the full 2300-2400 range and that has no effect.  I don't think those ports are the issue anyways, because I haven't even gotten to the DirectPlay part yet.

But 28900 through 29901.  I had missed that when I read that the first time.  I just had 28900.  In any case, there is no way I'm going to direct forward over a thousand ports. I heartily recommend anyone who is actually doing this on their firewall to seriously think about the security issues.  That's over 15% of all the ports - wWhat's the point in having a firewall if you open up a hole that wide where anything can come in completely unchallenged.

I read the GameSpy firewall doc and it says:
Quote from: GameSpy Firewall docs
  • 6667 (IRC)
  • 3783 (Voice Chat Port)
  • 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
  • 28900 (Master Server List Request)
  • 29900 (GP Connection Manager)
  • 29901 (GP Search Manager)
  • 13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
  • 6515 (Dplay UDP)
  • 6500 (Query Port)

It doesn't mention anything about a range from 28900 to 29901, though it does mention the individual ports 28900, 29900, and 29901.

My first attempt, when I was getting the Campaign Selector screen, I just had 28900 forwarded.  29900 and 29901 weren't.  If I add 29900 and 29901, I can no longer log into GameSpy.  It says "email address not found", as if I don't have an account and when I try to create an account it says "connection refused".  If I leave 29900 and 29901 off of my port forwarding, I can log into GameSpy, but (as you all know) my campaign list is completely empty.

So, I'm stumped.  I'll keep trying, and see if I can find out the issue.

Meanwhile, if anyone else has a firewall and is using Ronin's port list, I would very much appreciate if you would reconfigure the 28900-29901 range to be the three individual ports 28900, 29900, and 29901.  Do this and see if it still works.  If it does, Ronin's post should be edited.  As it stands, people may be ignorantly removing a big chunk of their firewall protection by following its suggestions.

OK, to login from behind a router, configure your lan statically and forward ports 2300-2400 TCP&UDP, 47624 UDP (thats all that is required for D2 play) to the client machine you want to play from. (best solution - though some get the DMZ to work.) Make sure your router is accepting pings from the wan side and is running the latest firmware and has its UPnP disabled if present.

Got it.  Works!  Part of it was an error in my forward scripts.

The full 100 ports from 2300-2400 aren't needed.  Only 2300-2309 are.  Actually, only 2302 would strictly be needed with DX9, but the GameSpy login acutally checks all 10 ports from 2300-2309.

Now all I need is to get OP so that I can actually find a server with people on it. :)

Thanks all for the help.

p.s. Someone should really edit Ronin's post or else you'll get a lot of people with wide-open firewalls.

Good stuff!  ;D  Thanks for the report!  There is a program called "Dxport"(?) that can minimise directplay port usage too but I havent tested it with SFC.

you may require additional ports for full directplay functionality (i.e.: PvP sessions...)

wrt to port security the main thing is to keep all your services on non standard ports and only open those that you require to the WAN. Worms just love to look for http and mail servers on the standard port... port scanning worms are rare and slow...
