Honda Pickup
« on: January 21, 2005, 12:53:40 am »
Honda enters an entirely new market segment with the world debut of the 2006 Ridgeline pickup truck.

Honda?s first entry into the half-ton pickup segment is a 4-door 5-passenger truck that offers a number of innovative features including a steel reinforced composite bed, a dual action tailgate, and a lockable watertight storage area location under the truck bed. The Dual Action tailgate can be lowered like a traditional tailgate or swing to the side.

Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter VTEC V6 engine that produces 255 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque, mated to a standard 5-speed automatic transmission.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, air conditioning, and 5-passenger seating. The second-row features a 60/40 split bench seat will lift up to allow using the rear seat area for cargo. Standard safety equipment includes side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, front side airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle Stability Assist, and traction control.

Unlike traditional full-size pickup trucks, the Ridgeline does not have a cargo bed that is separate from the passenger cab; the bed and cab are integrated, giving the truck a distinctive look. The Ridgeline uses a fully integrated closed box frame and unit body construction, and is rated for a half-ton (1,100-pound) bed capacity and 5,000-pound towing capacity.

The Ridgeline also features four-wheel fully independent suspension and a fully automatic Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel Drive System (VTM-4WD) that can transfer up to 70 percent of the available torque to the rear wheels.

Ridgeline will be offered in three versions, RT, RT-S, and RT-L, and will go on sale at Honda dealerships in March of 2005. Final pricing has not been announced but is expected to be in the range of $27,000 to $32,000.

I liked the look. I currently drive a Dodge Ram. Never owned anything other than a Ford or a Dodge.

That's not a pickup...

Its one of those gender-confused SUV's.

Honda came into the market at a bad time, with the Avalanche and Explorer SportTrac being established in this price range.

Ahem... if you are gonna get a 4WD get a jeep for goodness sake.  Might as well get it from the ones who perfected it.

Actually I have to admit there is one thing I do love about my Jeep Liberty in snow conditions (8-12 inches tonight).  If I put her in 4WD-Low gear I can still do a full U-turn in the street...  Nice to know someone thinks a turn circle is important even when you are in 4WD.

That is impressive- nice to see that Jeep is making practicality an issue even in a vehicle that was not really designed to go off-road. (Oh, come on now- you know that Grand Cherokees and Liberty's are made for street safaris. ;D )

Hmmm... 4-Low 40 degree front and rear clearance and a the full underplating that is known to be a jeep selling point.  Don't forget the gearbox coolant system.  I have taken my "Street safari" machine up a 12% grade with 6-10 inch rocks litterring the path.  Sure seems to do offroad o.k. for my taste.

Find me a reliable American-made vehicle and I'll consider buying one.

After having 2 Chevy Malibus (each with their 6,000-20,000 mile brakes), I had enough of "American reliability" for a while.

That being said, I don't think a big truck like that with only a V6 will be too popular at all.  Especially when the direct competition has a V8 with comparable gas mileage.

And yes, I know Japanese engines perform like they have a hidden pair of cylinders, but 250 horses for that 2-ton+ monster isn't enough, especially loaded with stuff.  Note it'll only tow 5000 lbs, and an Avalanche can tow something like 7000.
I was never here, you were never here, this conversation never took place, and you most certainly did not see me.

The only good Jeeps out there our the older ones prior to 1979 the last best Jeep made was a CJ5 or Civilian Jeep 5 as opposed to the UT 5 Utility Jeep 5 for the military. This is my area of expertise  I would buy a Bronco instead of a Jeep. The Renault Jeep and Chrysler Jeeps aren't all that great similar to when AMF owned Harley Davidson those were bad bikes There won't be any good Jeeps until they are on their own like Harley. If I was to buy imported I would go for Land Rover Ford owns them and they are more suited for the civilian than Hummers.

125,000 and runs like the day it was new....

I'm not claiming ALL American cars are equal in quality OR durabilty...

But a wise shopper will expend the necesarry rescources for a vehicle of both quality AND durabilty...

Buy cheap new...get cheap...

 or

Buy top mid end....buy a demo you would have bought anyways... get more vehicle for your dollar...

Buy old and do your homework (and at least be able to turn a wrench)...get MORE than you pay for...got the pontiac for 3500...she appraised at 5500...

NEVER buy a new year model...unless it's a classic or muscle car...and has a history of being driven and maintained...

Tell you the truth...I almost bought a malibu....it had the V6 and sport package....it had plenty of power....didnt torque steer...and rode fairly tight and smooth....it just didnt feel as crash worthy a vehicle as some of the bigger things we drove before...

I have come to hear that the brakes are basiclly too damn small...but after market brakes could have fixed that..

Besides the truck was a sweet deal... ;)

Yeah, it's cute.  Not quite as cute as the fords and cevy's out there, and definately not as cute as those little dodges, but very cute none the less.

Considerring most every car magazine tends to disagree with you... I think your data may be outdated.  The 4.0 Straight-six of the Wrangler is considerred by many to be the best six cyl. engine ever made.  The liberty is not in the same class as a Bronco, but it kicks the bejesus out of the Ford escape.  The Cherokee has owned its class for a long time.

New jeeps are just a prejudice issue from the guys that have had the old CJ's.

THey don't want the ones made after Dodge (and then Mitsubish in partnership with Dodgei IIRC) started working on them.

Most of the crap the automakers are putting out these days is designed for weekend road warriors and housewives who either like to pretend they are "sportsmen or know nothing about trucks/SUVs. When my sister began looking for her first car, all she was interested in was how it looked. I told her, "You can gold plate a turd, but all you have is a piece of shiite".

My father had an old one when I was a kid.  That thing was a tank.  It routinely hauled several tons while only being rated as a 3/4 ton pickup.  If they still build them like that then I pity the poor late model car that has a collision with one.
