AWDFlash.exe
« on: January 18, 2005, 08:25:42 am »
So, last night, my roommate tried to overclock his AMD. Well, it didn't work, and didn't reboot, so he needed me to pull a file from his Mobo boot CD. (AWDFlash.exe) Now, I go about my business, didn't delete it from my desktop after I gave it to him on floppy, and like 2 hours later I reboot.

The damn computer hangs at "Verifying DMI Pool Data" and then again at "Booting from ATAPI CD-Rom" (I forget the exact wording of the second one).  My temporary solution was to trip the jumper on the Mobo that sets everything to default, and it worked. However, I cannot delete AWDFlash.exe from my desktop! I believe this to be the culprit.  When I try and delete it, it says it is in use by another program or person.

What am I gonna do here? There's no process running thats using it, so I can't just end the process, and I can't seem to get rid of it. I'm scared to reboot now! Help!

http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/  will tell you what is locking the file.
If its explorer thats holding it hostage, i believe the steps to follow are.

Ctrl+Alt+Del
End process on explorer
Open dos prompt and delete the file
restart explorer
close task manager.

I had a stubborn file and that was the only way i could get rid of it.

I don't think that file would cause your computer to lock up at that stage of the boot process. (just a gut feeling could be wrong)

Did you still have that mobo cd in your drive when you rebooted? some cds are bootable and that message  "Booting from ATAPI CD-Rom" made me think you might have left it in.

no, I didn't. Whats worse is that it said there was a Disk error when it finally got past it. I had the Homeworld 2 CD in! Its a non-bootable CD, shouldn't have even read it!
