For all the current/former marines: a question

I know a lady, a former marine.  She got out at 30% disability for some damage that had been done to her legs. Apparently she couldn't meet the marine standards for retention because she couldn't run.  Well, the damage seems to be gone (I'd hope so since she is now running marathons fairly regularly) and she wants desperately to get back in.
After sept 11 a marine recruiter called her up asking her to come back in with no loss of rank, who she turned down for personal reasons, but with support from her spouse she is ready to give it a go now.  In anyevent, they're saying she can't do it, and she wants to find out what the deal really is.  She is willing to dump her 30% to get back in, but doesn't just want to throw it away without assurance she'll get back in at previous rank, in case her condition should come back to haunt her in the future, without any military coverage whatso ever to take care of her. 
Does anyone in here know the regs on this type of thing?  Any leads on who might know the regs?

Has she tried calling back the Recruiter ?

It's been 30 yrs, so I'm not sure...she also might want to try her VA rep. they may be able to help too.

If she can still pass the phsyical I don't see why not, they're calling back retired Vets to service again at their previous ranks.

She needs to contact the head recruiter in her area. 

I doubt there is much the regular guys can do.  But the head honcho should be able to pull some strings and get her back in.

Barring that, she may want to contact the local reserve unit and then apply for active status from there.

According to VA, you lose all entitlements if you go back, and will need to put in paperwork to refile a claim afterwards, but since she would be ex active duty again, I would imagine VA will say no-go. You either stay disabled and keep your med reviews up, or you change it and it changes your status. I know it sucks but I can see where VA is coming from.

I would NOT take any recruiter for their word, half of them do not know VA very well as they have no exposure to them, yet...
