I'm going to have to DL this just to see what It's all about. Actually thanks to Khallee, I'm starting to get an Intrest again into SFB.

Where are the Plasma Torps...

I'd ask for PPDs, but something tells me that I won't see them... :(

Yeah, FASA is the game where you could actually have a phaser or torpedo upgrade without changing the NUMBER of phasers or torpedos. This is a good thing.

Fasa is a game where you could improve the warp engines of a ship, and thus its speed, without dramatically increasing the ships firepower. This is a good thing.

Of course, the game does have its flaws.

Having finally had the time to really play a few scenarios and get teh feel of the interace, I can say it is one heck of a game. The scenario builder is clear and easy to use as well as the ship builder. On slower systems multi ship engagements take FOREVER but it plays just like the game too.,

All in all, an excellent game and worth playing often!

ATTENTION!!!

I've found a website that has the stats for the old FASA ships!

Players Rejoice! Now you can fill in all the missing ships even if you don't have the old FASA books!

http://www.sub-odeon.com/stsstcsmua/

Hope this helps people that want a little more variety!

EDIT:

Oh, yeah... and the link to the Rom plasma torp damage chart:

I noticed a big spike in website traffic coming from this thread, so I thought I'd stop by. I'm glad you're all getting some enjoyment out of the game.

As an aside, plasma torpedoes are half-way implemented: If you make a ship with torpedoes set to damage 253, 254, or 255, they should act like type 1,2, and 3 plasma torps (respectively). Set the power requirement normally. I haven't tested this in a while, but it should work.

If anyone runs into bugs, feel free to tell me. Send email to webmaster at slightlysilly.net.

Thanks for stopping in and telling us that. Hella game you built, man. Really awesome to see something like this out there!

I, for one, am a Romulan player in Star Fleet Battles and had just put a V-8 into the game and was wondering how to get the torps to work.

Just curious, are you going to keep developing the game to have cloaking devices?

WOW!! Thanks for stopping in with the heads up about the plasmas.  This game is absolutely fantastic.  I'd been hoping for something like this since my regular FASA group gave up about 15 years ago.  BTW.  The interface is so easy to use and understand that I have my 7 year old son playing.  Thanks for such a great game.

J. Carney- Cloaking is definitely on the "to do" list. I only work on the game every few months when the sudden urge to program strikes me, so it may be some time before you see anything. Other "to do's": multiplayer via TCP, a robust scenario system, and other un-implemented rules (like emergency heading changes and torpedo evasion).

DookyKing- Thanks! It's good that you're teaching your young one the finer points of starship command. :)

My only quibble is that there are none of the rommie ships included in the game download or the upgrade....quess I will have to put in the specas myself.

You can find some of the old contruction materials here:

http://www.angelfire.com/trek/stcsdc/

I didn't include the Romulan ships because I thought they might be underpowered without cloaking rules implemented. I'll try to put together a pack of Rom ships, though, as many people have requested them.

Nice program!  Had a blast playing around with it Yesterday!!!

If I may suggest, something I'd like to see in the next build is a way to speed up those phaser beam effects... 20 ship battles involve a lot of waiting around for all of those beams to hit...

Oh, and just a small bug report.

In the ship editor, the default sounds for the ship being damaged and destroyed don't exist.

I've been adding newships/pics like crazy.  I'm also trying to get rid of all of the scanned pics I can.  No offense to the responsible party, but I want to use rendered images where I can.  Which brings me to my point:  Did Klingon Fanatic ever find a place to host his FASA to SFC collection??  I can't remember, and there a ton of Romulan models I need.

Thanks,
Scott

I've put together a pack of Romulan ships and counters. You can grab it here:

http://www.slightlysilly.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=12

There's still no cloaking, but at least the Rommie fans get something.

I'll see what I can do about the beam speed, or make the weapons fire graphics optional.

I noticed the sounds were missing, too. D'oh! Big oversight when I made the distribution file. I'll post a patch with the sounds. Thanks for the report, kv1at3485.

I've been working on a set of scaled ship counters based on various renders or schematics, all scaled three meters per pixel. I included the scans with the game just to be as authentic as possible, but I'm with you -- bitmaps derived from other sources can be better.

Merlinfmct87 - Here's a link to an out-of-date game manual. Though it's not perfectly accurate anymore, it might help:

Cool! Thanks for the update JasonR.

In regards to cloaking how about making a "transparent counter" that could slide over the map and modifying the program to reduced to hit % in a MAJOR way. I wish I could help but I'm not a programmer.

Darkdrone was kind enough to get the TMP era  FASA Trek to SFC collection hosted. It is a good collection and included as many FASA ships as I could find. Naturally, since the release there have been at least twenty or so more models from the FASA TMP era and more on the way. There is a Larson Class in there by p81 that has a texture that got misaligned somehow but the collection was a good representation of what was available prior to May 2004.

Included are:

FASA Federation 94
FASA Gorn 06
FASA Klingon 64
FASA Other 18
FASA Romulan 39

Note the emphasis of the initial collection is NON-CANON FASA/FASA Fan made ships. Some TAS and TOS adversary ships have been included because there was a shortage of adversary ships overall when the collection was assembled.

D/L here:

http://starfleetcommand3.filefront.com/file/Fasa_to_StarFleet_Command_Mod;25588

I am looking forward to adding to my FASA to SFC collection when Trekmods, Terradyhne and Darth Chandley release the FASA ships they have been working on for many, many months.

This brings back some serious memories.  The first time I ever saw a copy of the FASA TCS, I was at band camp ("There was this one time, at band camp...") and the trumpet player down the hall had a copy.  I didn't get to play that night, but I decided it was a must buy, which started a decade-long love affair with that game and with Star Fleet Battles.

All in all, I think SFB was the better game, but it was hard to get the materials, so we tended to take what SFB stuff we DID have and create house rules for FASA out of it.  By the time my friend's interest petered out, our house rule manual was probably thicker than the manual that came with the game.

Good times...
"Dialogue from a play, Hamlet to Horatio: 'There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.' Dialogue from a play written long before men took to the sky. There are more things in heaven and earth, and in the sky, than perhaps can be dreamt of. And somewhere in between heaven, the sky, the earth, lies the Twilight Zone."

After messing around with the shipbmp scaling, I finally settled on the pixels being equal to 30% of the ship's length or width.  This would put the Excelsior at 140 x 140 pixels at the stated FASA dimensions.  I stopped at 30% because the Excelsior, at that size, touches the shield facing numbers in the power allocation screen.

Also,  I was wondering if the map dimensions are fixed, or if not, is there a maximum? Do they HAVE to be square?

And one final thing.  In my experience, Rom plasmas ALWAYS do the minimum damage on the damage chart( as if the targeted ship had used evasive maneuvers).  I noticed this while playing using the plasma info posted previously.

Thanks again for a great game.  This is the most Trek fun I've had in a long time.

If anyone's interested, I've created a forum for the game at my website. You can find it here:

http://www.slightlysilly.net/modules.php?name=Forums

To create an account, click "Login" in the upper right.

Scott- I think I'll be using 3 meters/pixel for future ship bitmaps (which is pretty close to 30%). Right now, the map dimensions are fixed. I'll check into the plasmas.

Dookey: The squares are actually hexes, of which is where the 6 shield facings fo SFC and other games originated from. They're set at 10,000km per hex: the counters were never meant to be scale, just representatice of where the ship is on the map and what direction it's facing, since a scale ship would just be a pinprick on the counter. Planets cover 7 hexes, to give you an idea of scale.

This is where SFC, Klingon Academy and the like get their odd scaling, and why the ships seem to be 5,000k across. ;)

I always hated that the ship counters were all pretty much the same size.  Play a Rom Nova and a Graceful Flyer at the same time and I find it very visually displeasing.  Scaling the counters is just a way show differentiation in ship sizes.  I know none of it is really to scale with the map or planets, I just think it looks prettier  ;D.  And Kthyla---I meant that the overall dimensions of the map were square (  3000 x 3000 pixels).  I know they aren't exactly 3000 pixels but it's in that neighborhood.
Anyway,  I'm getting a pretty fair collection of rendered ship counters now.  JasonR,  if you's like I can zip them up and pass them on to you.  Anything you liked you could use and saze yourself a little work.

Thanks again,
Scott
