OT: Anyone in Dallas?
« on: January 10, 2005, 12:02:00 pm »
Admins, please don't delete this or move it.  If you need justification, ask in a PM.

I need to know if there are any members of our group in Dallas.  I have a RL situation that I need to address, and I need eyes on the ground, and information about the Dallas area.

Thanks so much.

Look, my younger son has run away, and it is possible he is in Dallas.  I'm trying to get some info on Dallas.  That is what is going on.

I need to know things like:
where kids might go to skateboard,(For free mainly)
youth shelters,
where the street people hang out,
About Youth clubs and youth bands
The music and club scene in Dallas
Where a talented young musician might go to get a gig.
Publications a kid might read to find clubs or bands that need an extra

I'm coming to Dallas this Friday to look for my boy.  He has been gone since last Friday.  As you can imagine, his mom and I are quite concerned.  Dallas is a big place, and I need help in refining my search areas.

Please, if you have something to contribute, PM me or post here.

Thanks again.

Oy!  This is why I don't have kids.

Anywho!   If you have the money, contact a Private Investigator in Dallas. Also, if he plays a certain type of music, call a Dallas radio station that has the same format.  They will know where the right clubs are for your search,

But you are right, Dallas is huge.   Good luck.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, but you should also contact the authorities. both the Dallas PD and the FBI. They can help. No he's not a criminal, but but he could be in grave danger just because he's alone with no support structure. So do yourself and your son a favor and call the police about this.

We've called the cops.  They took a nice report, and put him in the NCIC.  But he will not register on their radar unless he is stopped and his DL or car is run.

Thanks for the ideas.  Why do you think FBI?

Well, they're mainly for kidnappings, but if he crossed state lines in his running away, getting the Feds involved can be useful.

As for putting him in the NCIC, I think they probably put him in the missing persons database, rather than the National Crime(Criminal?) Information Computer. Though perhaps the NCIC may have a missing persons database reference or interface with the national missing persons database directly. I'm not sure.

I'm in and out of Dallas all the time bro.  Check the local YMCA, and Boy's and Girl's CLUB of America as they often fund shelters in major metro areas.  When my oldest son took a hike, he ended up in a local park sleeping in a tent...he returned after 3-days wet and with a bruised ego.  Hopefully your son has the same sense to come home after a few days...they usually do bud.  You can also find a chap who calls himself RFA-Volum in GSA (evenings), he lives and works in Dallas and might be a resource on local shelters, safehouses ect.  He's a great guy and I'm sure would be happy to help.

No matter what..hang in there..he'll find his way back home.

Deep Ellum is the neighborhood you want to try first, Maz. It's the art / music / youth culture capitol of Dallas.

Wish I were still living there to help you look for your boy.

Good luck to you.

Thanks to all who have read and replied.

We have multiple sources that my son and his buddy went all the way to New Orleans from Tulsa, and they tried to make a living as street musicians.  I now believe he is in the Baton Rouge area, headed home.  He is broke, stinky, and ready to come home.  He has not contcated us yet, but I am now convinced the other kid is in an abusive situation, and afraid to come home, and that has been the sticking point.

More as I know it.

My son is home.  He went to Dallas.  Spent one night.  Then he went to Austin.  Then he went to New Orleans and played the trumpet on Burbon Street for money.  He slept in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

He was befriended by some of the older musicians who told him the places where he was safer than others.  They also told him things his Dad had been telling him.  He was ready to come home, but the boy he was with is in a not-so-good situation at home, and he was the sticking point.

I got the call from my son shortly after Noon on thursday.  He was east of Baton Rouge.  I sent him a little money, and told him to find a safe place to hole up in Shreveport, where I would meet him.  His grandfather and I moved out at 2:05 from Tulsa, and were in Shreveport by 8 PM.

I was deeply concerned that the other boy would chicken out and persuade my son to take off again.  But, as they got to Shreveport and found a good spot to sit, their car died.  They managed to get it running again and hole up at a Chevron station, but at that point they knew they needed to stay put.  I consider this Divine Intervention.

We met up with them, and there was an emotional reunion.  We quickly looked at the kids car, and then moved on.  The car failed in Texarkana, and you cannot get an alternator belt there at midnight, so we stayed in a hotel overnight.  I fixed the car and we got home to Tulsa Friday afternoon.

Clearly, we have some things to work out in the family.  I think my son is wiser, and more willing to do the sometimes boring things that need to be done to accomplish his dreams.

Thanks to all who helped, offered concerned comments, or just said a prayer.

Might I suggest getting him into some program that fosters his music skills.

Also, take a look around at some of the music based colleges.

If he's that talented, you might as well work with his desire and talent in a way that sets him up to have a chance at a good life.

Far easier than fighting it, that's for darn certain.
