For any Brits - BT charges by the backdoor!
« on: January 07, 2005, 06:17:04 am »
Get any of your friends with the 1571 service to drop it immediately.

Quote
A friend heard on Radio 4 this am that from early Feb '05 - daytime call charging will commence then from 06.00hrs (instead of the current 08.00hrs). So they thought they would have a quickie look @ the BT website and low and behold they found the following statements - which they did not know about.

Call Return (press 3) element of BT 1471 - from the 1st August 2004, BT will be introducing a 6p fixed fee to the Call Return element of BT 1471. ...

AND ......

BT ANSWER SERVICE 1571
ANOTHER CAUTIONARY TALE.

You may have noticed when telephoning your friends recently that if their line is engaged you hear a recorded message telling you that "the number you are calling is busy" instead of the traditional engaged tone. You may also be invited to leave a message for them. This probably means that they have registered for the BT 1571 answer service. What you may not realise is that you will be charged for this call, whether you leave a message or not. Even if you hang up straight away it will cost you the 5p minimum. BT consider the call to have been connected as soon as their recorded message starts.

If you have registered for the 1571 service yourself the converse is true. You will not be paying for it on your bill but all your callers will be charged at least 5p even if they do not wish to leave a message for you. If you do not wish to impose these charges on them you can de-register by phoning BT on 0800 800 150. This call will be free!

We had the 1571 turned off a little while ago.....because we use dial up, no one can get through when we are online.
A family member used about £7 trying to get through...they had no idea about the charges.

How much is the TV tax and Road tax nowadays?  They were both 50 quid when I was there from '85 to '88.

Yes to the others, in GB, you must pay a tax every year for the privelage of watching you television.

Well, it's the "privilage" of watching the BBC.....most people just pay for SKY.
TV lisences are like £100 these days....I think. :)

A little over £100 - I think £116 for the tv.  And we only get Eastenders (boring soap) or reality tv from the bbc these days.  I think I only switch on the bbc 2 these days to watch Top Gear on Sundays.

Road tax varies now depending on what CO2 emission band your car falls into.  The lowest is £75 (very small car) - the highest I think is around £165.

Let's see...petrol is 1.69 per US gallon here or .42 per quart...5 quarts in an English gallon is 2.10...at 2 quid/$...a tad over a quid a gallon...what's a gallon there cost?

Not to be mean, but they tax the $hit out of you there...time for a tea party..get rid of the VAT

Thankfully not yet...but it came close.  We're all metricated up the rear over here. The latest prices are:

95 RON 77.6p per litre
98 RON 83.8p per litre

Le grande bière

Least that's what I say on my driving holidays to France!! ;D ;D

You know.  The roads over there are silkly smooth.  Unlike our pothole equivalents!

Edit:  Must add that the bière is separate to the driving.....not at the same time!
