Man-Kzin Wars?
« on: January 07, 2005, 06:28:21 pm »
OK so finding out Im waiting at least another week for SGO I felt it was time to catch up
on some reading.
Then I discovered I already had.
Now on one of the SFB boards a guy basically said that the Kzin and Lyrans were both (?) based on the Kzin
in the Larry Niven universe.
Personally I think he must be insane, but I've never read any of the novels soo..

Has anyone? (and I know some of you must have)
Are they worth it? and would they be worth tracking down?
(No bookstore seems to have any in stock in town)

Any particularly good? Any too avoid?

OK got two words for ya "Larry Niven" but because your so short and you might have a bit of trouble hearing with all the pounding foot steps of the ants going buy, yes they are worth it and the Kzin, and the lyarn come from the same root race, just like the Roms and the Vulcan's come from the same root race.

I just read The Man-Kzin Wars Volume I (picked it up at Goodwill's used book store) and I liked it.  Humans, however, were far more deadly than the cats.

I've read all of the Man-Kzin books.

Lyrans are never mentioned.

Yes, they are an enjoyable sci-fi read.  I recommend you start w/ Vol 1, but since the books are actually a series of shorts that do a little jumping around in time ... it isn't that important that they be read in order.

thats because the kitty's were distracted but balls of yarn ;D but really it was because of the honor code and the preference for singel combat

To fully understand the Man-Kzin wars, you have to read the rest of Larry Nivens books.
Wonderful series, but the whole gamut of the Niven books makes things fall into place.
Unfortunately he went from real physics as we understand them to faster than light travel... In my mind the stories were better before.
But irregardless they are great books and I enjoy them very much, re-read them often.

The Man-Kzin Wars are a great series, I take my callsign from them, but give way too much credit to the humans, and even they have sense enough to put them in the "fiction" section..... ;D

Also check out Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers.

oh and if ou want to do Lyran research I suggest anything pertaining to "Hello Kitty"   :P
