BSG Ships Project continues update: 08/01/05
« on: January 06, 2005, 02:50:41 pm »

Second one ive done, the first weighed in at 18,000 poly's so I decided to do a rebuild, This is how she looks, the rest of the detail I will add into the textures, I might make some diferent ships next from the BSG Univese, different vipers and the like, different colours and varients.

This in 7236 poly's  :)

OMG... this thing ROCKS.

I really wish someone would do a really GOOD Galactica for SFC OP.

I usually fly Carriers in Campaigns and have an old Galactica model I use....

Dammit, I wish we could get Viper contrails, but this is good enough!!

Very nice!

Seems to be a BSG bug going on around here.
Btw: Found a Colonial Bomber from the X-box/PS2 game http://www.johnlomax.com/bomber.htm Which would look good.
Not to mention this site: http://www.galactica.tv/colonials/mini.shtml

Keep up the good work!

Please,
the new stuff on the show is far superior to the old.

New Galactia looks better, New Vipers look better, new Cylons look
WAY better.
And the new Cylon ships look better as well.

"To each his own," as they say...
I imagine the same kind of difference of opinion we see between Ent/TOS/TMP/NGen design will be seen between old and new BSG.
Personally, I liked the old designs and think they are great for their time.  However, I like the new look even more even though I still miss is the old style Basestar (and the Cylon voices), and I certainly prefer the new series to Galactica 80...

so which one looks better.. IMHO the top image of the Original Battlestar.. more realistic than the smoothe skin new one.. especially being as old as the show states it is.. as for the storyline.. the Old Series is much better.. as far as the new series goes.. better space combat..

as for ships.. the old series wins hands down..

as for the Cylons.. I much prefer the old Cylon models to the new ones and making them look human is just plain silly.. I think that they would need to mix the old Cylons with the new ones in order to bridge the gap.. besides in the Pilot Episode, the lady did state that the old models were still around and had their purpose..

on top of that, the way things went in the new BSG saga, up until boxy appeared, it could have been a continuation from the 1980's second saga ... (though the original 1970's version was the best).. this would explain having all the original series tech in ships and Cylons models in display cases and so forth and yet still have all the new gadgets.. but they screwed the timeline up by having Boxie as a refugee... Much like Enterprise screws up the timeline in Star Trek...

Great looking model. Looking forward to seeing the end result. Stewiedude, how did you get the blue on the nose to feather into the white like that? Neat effect, is that done using a plugin? I'd like to know unless its a trade secret  :o

looking good Stewie!

At this rate we should have a few more ships to add to the BSG line up (new and old)

OT: I like the older versions story line but its hard to pass up on the newer ship designs.

PSpro7 has a little white hand, click on that and go to your tools box. There should be listings for smudge, push, burn etc... just grab the one you want to start playing with it.

If it makes you feel any better I didn't find it until about two weeks ago and I have been using PSPro7 off and on for 3 years.

It's very nice, but it isn't the MkII from the new series, it's kind of a hybrid between the old MkI and the MkII as far as I can see: I found this link ages ago with orthos and perspective shots of the MkII: http://www.starshipbuilder.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000002.html - this is the actual CGI mesh used in the series, notice the wings are a completely different shape, as are the engine housings and the whole fighter is much more graceful and elongates than the old series MkI Viper. Nice, but not the MkII

BTW Pestalence, have you seen the new series? Not the mini-series thing they did ages ago, the actual full length series, the story is so much more developed, for example the first episode centred on the effects on the crew of being constantly chased by the Cylons - they've been awake constantly for weeks with almost no sleep having to keep on jumping to escape the Cylon fleet that's tracking them. The original BSG used a nuclear holocaust of billions of humans as an excuse for the characters to have some swashbuckling adventures, the repercusions of the annihilation of the species are actually given some thought in the new series. BTW the new series is not a continuation of the old in any way, it's a re-telling of the original story, but there's no Earth, it's a myth (I reckon they just wanted to avoid a BSG1980 type thing, man that sucked).

Oh well as they say to each their own, everyone has their own opinion and (hopefully) their own TV so they can choose what to watch. :)

So... Im throwing a lit match into a puddle of gasolene... My Cobra Idea being the match and you guys being the gasoline  :D

So b4 you slam me for going completley nutts, take a second look and be a little open minded... My idea behind this is that It whould be used for longer distance attack runs and stuff.... twice the firepower of a viper and 1 extra engine for speed... it is less manouverable though im sure!! A cockpit also to seat 2...
This is the first basic version, Id like to stick a singular rear blaster that the second pilot could operate?? Im going to completley change the hull pattern and have the nose stripe slip down the sides. Also this will have fonts, I-e ship number on the wings etc...

Just thought id let you make the comments for severre changes first  :)

PS I hope you guys can see the image cos I cant... and thats at two different hosts ::)

I don't recall the original version (from the original series) having any "mark" designation, just Viper.  "Mark 2" came from the new miniseries, and was a tweaked version of the original (as Marauth posted).  There's also a Mark 5 or 7, I forget which, that was the "state of the art" Viper from the new series.

The Cobra seems like an interesting extrapolation of the design; my only suggestion would be giving it some heavier weaponry of some sort.  I had a Battlestar Galactica board game back in the day which gave Vipers "proton torpedoes"; I don't think this blatant Star Wars ripoff was actually in the series, but it might be a place to start...  :)

Probably under or to the sides of the nose, not directly where that vent is on the Viper, it probably does something important. Yes the one you built is the old Viper which is now referred to by fans as the MkI - a logical conclusion given the MkII of the new series is the old model which looks fairly similar. The cutting-edge Vipers that get hacked into and disabled by the Cylons are the MkVII and look much cooler, if only they had a decent paint job (they're kind of a mixture of metallic dull grey and metallic pastel blue depending on lighting :P). In the series they've been fixed (they're no longer all networked to a big central computer) and are used to differentiate main characters in combat sequences - Apollo flies a MkVII and Starbuck flies a MkII.

I'm very interested in if we'll ever get to find out what happened to the MkIII, IV, V and VI type Vipers but it's unlikely they'll bother coming up with designs for them as the Gallactica obviously doesn't carry them (she only has a couple dozen fighters in total and not enough pilots for the ones they have) and there are no other Colonial ships left after the miniseries.
If I determine the enemy's disposition of forces while I have no perceptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is fragmented. The pinnacle of military deployment approaches the formless: if it is formless, then the deepest spy cannot discern it, nor the wise make plans against it.
