All trekked out. Time for Andromeda
« on: January 04, 2005, 06:42:41 am »
Does this ever happen to any one else? For some reason I am tired of trek. Though I still like sci-fi. But I like some of the newer sci-fi shows better than trek. I'd like to see an Andromeda mod come out. I know there is an Ascendent done already, but there are lots of other ships from that series that need doing. I don't want the ascendent just thrown into a trek mod as it deserves its own mod I think. This is way to big a project for myself though. Any one else interested in working on a Andromeda mod?

There are a ton of shows that needs their own mods and I do mean complete mod of about everything you can throw into it. Like you I am burnt out on Star Trek, a little Trek can only take you sofar.  ;)

Andromeda
Babylon 5
Farscape
BattleStar Galactica (new & old)
StarGate

The only issue is the over all lack of models to even get a mod going for Andromeda. And your posting is a start in the right dirrection of getting this ball rolling.

Personally I tire and cycle through various sci-fi series...

My enthusiasm for Trek was on the wane as they released Voyager, and it has progressively declined over the years.  Even the movies didn't do much to bouy my interest - but I still like modelling for it, but you'll notice I tend to steer clear of the Federation.  I just can't stand the cloying, saccharine, holier-than-thou schmaltz they've come to represent.  Characters are safe and have become watered down clones of what we've seen before, and the storylines tend to suffer from a lack of longterm cohesion...  Significant moments are glossed over quickly and forgotten.  You could argue this is down to using different writers and directors, but then that's where the script/story editors should bounce in and take control...

My perenial favourite remains Doctor Who, although I've recently revisited The Avengers/New Avengers, The Tomorrow People, Space 1999, UFO, Sapphire and Steel, Blake's 7, V, Buck Rodgers <gasp!>, Lexx, Lost in Space, Timeslip, Logan's Run, Battlestar Galactica (1970s), Babylon 5, Farscape (probably my favourite of most modern Sci-Fi series)- and I'm currently working my way through the first six seasons of Stargate as well as the new Battlestar Galactica (last night's episode was probably my favourite since the mini-series)...

I have yet to see Andromeda - but when I start earning pennies again, I may just buy it on DVD anyway - either that, or start picking up Hitchcock movies or more Ealing films (just WHY did they bother remaking The Ladykillers!? - and so badly too!!)

Which reminds me - does anyone have or know of schematics for the Flagship Draconia from Buck Rodgers?

I sort of agree with you MR trek has been declining for years for me as well, i used to watch religously ST-TNG but now only on occasion, as for Doctor Who i have been a big fan since the late seventies when they had it on PBS every afternoon to bad its no longer aired locally anymore it was an awsome show. i think lately my love lies more toward sci-fi Anime, Gundam is fantastic as well as Akira and Fist of the North Star and you cant forget the show that started it all here in the US Robotech/Macross saga. i just cant seem to get enough. and as my modeling improves you will no doubt see more anime based ships from me :)

as for Ardala's flagship i know of no ship schematics for it but i think they had a piece on starship modeller about the restoration of the original filiming model, or was it modelers resource???

Yup DR WHO was my all time favorite also. I liked Tom Baker as the Doctor the best. That show is being redone but I doubt it will be as good except for effects. Unfortunately DR WHO is difficult too mod with few ships and the ones they had were tin can-ish.
I could use the specs to Andromeda ships other than the Ascendent if there available somewhere. I am going to start inching forward on this project.  It wouldn't need too many ships to start. It could be set up that 3 of the race slots in SFC3 are hostile or allied against the common wealth.

Hey MR, a bit of warning on  the Andromeda show. At times it has a ho;ier than thou feel like trek but its balanced by characters like Tier (sp?) and harper. The characters have more flaws, thus can be related too more than ones from ST that have been recloned from previous series. Like many shows, Andromeda gets refined or tweeked as it runs more years. The set of the Ascendent is very good, yet the androids they used  at the  start looked like they could have been made in 1980.

The show was published by ASD, they also did Farscape. Farscape had a bigger budget and thus the make-up on aliens was more elaborate. Farscape looks as good as a movie where Andromeda looks like a TV show.  I got the 1st 2 sesons on DVD now and it has some good shows and bad shows like any series, I do like the edge or conflict between main charactors.

Had to jump in , Someone Mentioned Dr. Who. Between the good Doctor, Monty Python, and Red Dwarf, the UK will always be my friend.

Oh yeah, Benny Hill. He could run Pretty fast for a  fat man.

Who ever added negative Karma,  I havn't said anything negative here for a month so maybe its time to turn the page?

Benny Hill was funny, I also like Mr. Bean. The Brits sense of Humor is Hilarious. Anyway I plan on getting some stills of the Neachean (sp?) ships for a start. If anyone wants to model some ships from Andromeda post in here. If 2 or 3 of us each did 2 ships we would have a good start. It would help to get organized so were not all doing the same ones. btw Organizing projects with others isn't my strong suit. I am a better supporter than a leader. So if someone who is an Avid Andromeda fan would like to step up and run with this that would be great, otherwise I will just muck along with it. Yup I'm a mucker. :)

I'll see if I can find some screen shots to help in the coming days. Not sure how to go about modding weapons in SFC3. Since missles are the weapon of choice and SFC3 doesn't have any. I kinda ruled out OP cause there just are not enough ships to fill out that many race slots.

Man I can't Believe I forgot MR. Bean. That show is Great. so many good Brit Coms still play sundays here in OKC on Sunday nights.

StewieDude, That would be fantastic, If you could do a few ships, From some of the other SciFi series. as much as I love trek, and the work others do, we could use some other Genre's here. I know someone last month was asking for SG sites/ships, But Couldn't find Very many.

Too be honest, the guys here are More in the know about what would be Needed. However, I would love to have the Tartus (spelling?) as a personal ship for my SP version of the games.

Yeah I know that's wierd, But I love the whole Series.

Stewiedude I have seen your WIP, nice work. Definatly could use your help on Andromeda ships. I have been scouring the web for ship pics. I have seen dozens of sites but there focus is on the actors. Only pics I found were of the Ascendent. The main races are the Nechians and the Than. Wish I could get some reference pics of the ships. Definately need the Marra (sp?) frieghter done. At least 1 nechian ship and 1 Than.

I have season 1 and 2 but I don't have any way to take video captures from the show. I am going to start re-watching the episodes specifically to look at the ships involved. I may consider doing this mod in OP as the missles would lend well to the Andromeda series.
It might be that each race would get 2 seperate slots this way.

Atheorhaven did up the Tardis, check out his site. Sorry don't have the link.  TARDIS  -stands for Time and relative dimensions in space- In DR. who it was the time ship. A chameleon ciruit allowed it to change form in order to fit into the environment. Dr. Who's chameleon ciruit was broken so it was stuck in the form of a Blue police phone box.

I think there is a model of the Tardis.  I think it is at Atheorhaven's site.

Although there is something the bothers me.  Why hasen't anyone made ships from the Wing Commander games series.  Those games rocked.  My personal favorite is WC 4.  Great acting and SFX.  They used real movie film.  There are sites that have 3d ship models and I have some that are ported to 3ds from the later games.

Here is a screen I found of the Nietzchian ship. They should have taken one about 1/2 second sooner to show the underside.
Based on this pic the model obviously would not match exactly because I don't have enough views. This is from the 1st episode shown which was the 3rd one filmed. 2 types of Nietzchin ships were shown, this is the larger of the 2. The other type appeared to be used as destroyers. Click the link to view the capture.

These are the best I found, slim pickens. The 1st 2 are of the Neitzchian.

The Ascendant

The Maru freighter

I'll be posting more captures as I locate them and might start a thread specific to Andromeda modding. I intend to give this ship a try but Stewie I think you could do it up better than me. But there would be no problem having 2 varients due to the limited variety in ship types.

I am doing up the Nietzchian one for sure. I got it started and wanted to make sure I could get the general shape before I said anything. I'll post a WIP when its farther along. :)

I love those Andromeda designs thanks for the link. As far as making an Andromeda mod, I see now that the biggest problem will be poly count. The tubular ship designs necessitate higher poly counts. Thus OP likely unsuitable, imagine eaach player controlling 3 ascendants. I am not even sure of the poly count as milkshape won't load the mod. So its likely over 12k.

Also any drones or slip fighters would need to be real basic for poly reasons.  What I might consider is an SFC3 mod with 1 High Guard slot, 1 Nietzchian slot and 2 pirate slots made up of a grab bag of pirate ships and minor SFB races (been eyeing up MajorRacal's Gorn and Lyrans)  I think it would look funny to include the Feds with the High guard as there from way different eras.

There just would'nt be enough ships unless some generic pirates get added in. Another possibility for thr High Guard is to just use the Ascendant for every  class and just rescale it.

Say where is Kaliban? The Ascendant he made didn't have a read me in it and I should get hold if this mod  gets finalized.

Here is the progress on the Neitzchian cruiser. This ship is a must have for any ANdromeda mod. It 2nd in appearance only to the Ascendent. Just some notes. This WIP currently has 12,000 poligons. Over half of these are in the tubular trim.  I may cut back on trim pieces as I estimate that I still need 3000 poligons to finish it. Milk shape often vraps out around 12k polies, so not sure if I can add all the details in the mesh. Not having real good reference pics, this mesh is my best guess.

Comments welcome. If something seams off, feal free to point it out. JUst remember though that its a compromise between detail and poligons.

Update.  Added some stuff to the hull. Not the best angle shot but it shows the updated parts. 12,500 poly. OK done except for fixing errors and welding. On too texturing. As LS says thats 70% of the model so taking my time with it. Got a lot done cause were getting snowed in.  :P
