Unhandled exception
« on: January 08, 2005, 03:40:08 pm »
Recently I've been getting "Unhandled Exception" errors from my SFC3 installation. I had added a ship pack to the game and I beleive this is the major cause for the errors. I had investigated deeper and noticed it changed the layouts of the default ships, stipping them of transporters and tractor beams even though the defaullayout.txt stil claims they are there. It also added junk ships to the list that didn't need to be there, which I removed from the defaultcore file and defaultlayout. However, when I am in a skirmish game or a campeign mission, the game usually crashes when I get inside weapons range of an enemy ship or base, sending me back to the desktop with this message:

Unhandled Exception! in Version 1.00 Build 435

Any ideas what's kicking the bucket? The game version for the moment is 1.00, unpatched except for the ship addons.

Well, it's unpatched, and modified as well, so it could be anything. I suggest doing a complete re-install.

That could be a bit of a problem. Short of grabbing my UK version (the US ones I wanted were asking for between $80 and $100, rediculously high for my budget) and trying again. The only thing I could think of that can count for a patch is the DX9 fix. The game is behaving better now, though I find confusion in how I am replaying the final Fed Campeign mission and getting stuck in the "capture Arai on the planet" peice of the mission. I can knock down the shields of the planet fine, but the transport gets botched. The "away team" stays on the ship though the graphics of the lowered shield and transporter sound still occur. Just no dialog. I may just need to reinstall.

Should I make backups of my entries for the ship model pack? I made tweaks to one specific ship addon, an Ambassador, so it would seem more canon and cover certain gaps in it's firing arcs. Though that doesn't have much to bear on this situation, I was just wondering on if I should back them up into specific files elsewhere and re-add them after the reinstall.

The best thing to do is what Tracey said and completely patch up you game to the 534_B build .There are few bugs in the stock game like the transporter. You could move and back up your ships but when playing the 534_b build use the stock ships and they are canon to start off with .You can get the 534_b build in Dynaverse 3 Experiences Forum poster is Pestalence or it is in the Announcements Forum. You can also get here at EFFHQ site in the upper right hand corner where it say SFC3

   www.nightsoft.net/effhq/

I would play the entire campaigns with 534_B build and no modded shiplist that is the way it is meant to be played on the Dynaverse 3 you can use any mod you want as long as you put together a server for it.This how the Dynaverse 3 players do it.

It's not that I wish to go multiplayer, being on a 56k. It's just that the addon ships I got were a Constellation (USS Stargazer), Ambassador (USS Excalibur), and a few others. I limited myself to the Amby and Constellation, plus an SFC II conversion I am debugging before I try to actually add it into the game. ONly I lack Photoshop and know nothing about the proper way to "debug" the model so SFC3 will be happy with it. I've read that most SFC2 ships confuse it into a crash, so getting it to work right is going to be a task. But anyway, I'm going to see how this works out. I just need to make backups first before following through with the reinstall and patching.

Edit: Reinstalled and patched. The Ambassador was re-added and it didn't complain about it. Also took my test conversion without any real issue (except the model not quite fitting the shield grid sphere). The patch did mention that it couldn't find two folders and one file though, which are: "modinfo", "Scimitar", and I can't remember the name of that file, except the dos box referred to it's name as "*".

Those custom missions you can use the Stock ships and for the conquest you can use your own ships and go and conquer who you want.I would use the stock ships in storyline campaign that is how most did theirs. What you want is 3D studio max a modeling program not photoshop. It is aviable for download but you do have to pay for it with Credit Card.I hope this all helps.

That's a problem, seeing as you can go a head and call me the modelling moron. The "fun" stuff of modelling (making the meshes and the image files around them) I try to avoid. The conversion I did was from SFC2 up to SFC3, and that was as complicated as I could swallow. Course I wish the "recacher" program that came with the SFC3 modding tools wouldn't crash when I try recaching the SFC2 model. Sure it looks like it oes it, but I don't know if it says anything special or not and when II try to close it, that's when it crashes on me. :-\

The people you realy need to talk to is a SFC3 modder.I am more used to modding SFC2 but mot 3 yet I tried to put a ship in the game put I might be lacking something.I would suggest that you look for Chris Jones and in his sig at the bottom is a Name called StarTrek Gamers Directory click it and there are SFC3 modders there.I am not implying you are modeling moron as I never said that.

Actually, I was saying you could because I am acknowledging that I'm a modeling moron. :P I'll see if they can help, and if the project turns out correctly, I'll go ask for permissions on letting it out as a public conversion. Right now it's a personal-use thing in a debugging phase.

Here we go again. This time it decided to attack ModelRenderR.dll. And at the time I was taking an Intrepid, a Norway, and a K'Vort out to attack a Borg freighter convoy all by it's lonesome inside neutral space just bryond the fed border. Patch version 1.01 (Build 534), only mods being the addition of the Ambassador and WickedZombie's Constitution TNG Refit (ollld version I converted).

If I recall correctly, when applying the latest patch, you are no longer required to use the DirectX 9 fix, and it has been said that doing so will cause problems.

I didn't use the DX9 fix. That file I moved elsewhere. And I wasn't being attacked, I was the offense. :) I may try again to see if it occurs again though, and if so, I'll take down the entire code, a snapshot if possible, and place it in the bugs section.
