Cartel to Cartel map interaction questions
« on: December 31, 2004, 08:19:52 am »
Is there anyone "In the know"  that knows if settings work and can be changed to allow for a campaign using only the cartel map?  I would want ZERO interference from the empire map including no mandatories when "under" their space, and missions that pulled in other cartel ships, not empires.   Is this possible?  Also, if empire ships were added to a cartels part of the shiplist, would it be capable of engine doubling?

Thanks !!

Not necessarily "in the know", but...

1: Mandatories - do pirates pull mandatories in "ally" empire space?  If so, last I checked there only needs to be 1 hex per empire on the map, so these empires can get 1 hex in each corner, and they can be declared off limits, the rest of the empire map can be neutral... otherwise, ally all the cartels to all the empires...

2: Engine Doubling: last I knew, there is an sfc.ini setting that shuts engine doubling off, but that's not a file that can be crc-checked

in artifex u cant see the cartel colors... Too many unknowns. Replace all the empire ships with pirates, Cut and paste. As long as the empire and cartel lists match, you are basically 'donating' and engine doubling works.

If you want to use all the taunts, i guess u can go thru the process of doing that, i think wanderer know how.

I'd be happy to play a pirate server if you used the empire race slots. I'd have serious reservations about the feasability of it all if it were done entirely on the cartel side...

I dunno. Maybe the cartel would work. I'd try to get it to work. It may open new doors...

Should be able to... just make sure all the empire layer hexes are neutral (leave a few at the map edges - news spam) or make sure all the cartels are allied to all the empires.. and as Dizzy suggests put cartel ships in the empire slots...

But why not just swap the desired cartels into empire slots? (I'd think that would be easier) edit: ah because doubling will not be available... I haven't tried to 'donate' engine doubling to empire slots as Dizzy describes by copying catrel ships into empire slots leaving the original cartels intact but moving them to the top of the list I assume? Have you tested this Dizzy?

In SFC.ini under [Network] add AllowEngineDoubling=0 to disable engine doubling. (applies to all ships for all cartels though...)

aside: I just thought of a way to possibly force this(?): (since the ini can never be crc checked as it is a user prefs file and will always differ) Set up the mod as with executable that extracts the necessary files to the OP folders, then edits the ini to disable engine doubling and windowed mode, launches OP, and when OP exits it deletes the mod files and restores the files that were present when launched. In this way the mod is only accesbile through the exe and forces disabling of engine doubling... hmm this concept has merits for other reasons too...

Yes

Although engine doubling can be disabled in the ini file I think.

This is un-checkable.

See my post above, I think I have a way to force it if desired.

But I dont think disabling engine doubling will help Jeff here. I think the suggestion of 'donating' cartel ships to the empire slots would be the best approach.

Yes, so it has just been pointed out. You could get the mission script to check it I guess.

Too complicated and EVERY script needs to have this check.   Adding the Priates to an empire slot is just plain easier.

Thanks for the responses.

Basically, I was thinking up some "premises" for Storm Season III.

One was that due to horrific losses to each empire's abilty to build ships, that each race began impound and put into service any battle viable pirate ship that they captured.

No matter if a campaign is OOB or not, players will get into the best ship they are allowed to before OOB kicks in, a lot of time being the CW's or CCH's.  It gets a little boring once you get there the second day of the server, and have nothing left to "look forward to".  I thought I'd add some pirates in for spice.   They might not be able to beat those ships the players prefer best, but would at lest offer a chance to fly something different.   I would of liked to have the engine doubling work, so that's why I wanted to use the cartel side.

Not a big deal I suppose...  Thanks for the input again....  ;)

Um, I know how to make engine doubling work for an Empire ship.  We discovered this once on accident  ;D

I thought DH meant he could get engine doubling to work in an empire slot. Thanks for explaining that Dizzy.

yeah, thats how you do it. Have the same ship in the cartel slot as the empire slot. Sometimes the donor shp must come first and sometimes that can be handled serverside shiplist.
