Why CL and below and why not CA and below? can you please explain the rationale behind this.

CL as opposed to NCL, not CA to be precise. Because NCL and higher specialty ships can take out a DN when they are flown by pilots with nothing to lose or risk themselves. This leads to a cheesy style of play that makes the dyna unfun for me. On GW4, no pilot should have ever been denied the right to fly an NCL or larger specialty ship as they were still very plentiful. But they had to be careful about they used those ships, and couldn't exploit unrealistic tactics with rare and limit resources without potentially paying a price, and actually risking something of value, like their opponents are. That is the rational. It also allows for a greater diversity in the shiplist getting flown by pilots on the dyna, so every match isn't the same ship matchup time and time again.

With the transfer option, unrestricted CL and smaller, and an unassigned FM spot for DNs, BCHs, and Specialty ships, I find it hard to believe that every single pilot wouldn't have a chance to fly his favorite ship. He just can't fly it kamakzi style and expect to have another waiting in the yards for him.

See hre's the thing Chuut
Your problem is you need a brain.
Once you have one it will become much easier to function in today's society
and you'll post more useful stuff than this giberish.

I have a brain, actually, a very active one, its just kinda warped  :P

As for functioning, anyone can do that, it takes a true genius to be dysfunctional, trust me its in the Holy text of "The Likkerpig Chronicals".

Yes unuseful gibberish that has spawned the most commented on thread in quite a while  ::)

It all depends on the server as to what kind of OOB is needed.

A server with Roms/Gorns and Kzin is going to need some serious "specialty ship" restrictions in order
to keep the plasma boys form being wiped out on day 1.
A Fed Klink server would need far fewer restrictions.
A hydran/Lyran server would probably work with severe fighter CnC rules and nothing else.

It's all subjective.

That is a very good point, obviously Pig has drained the Star Empire of all the booze, cause that is way too sober thinking.

The entire cascade of rules and restrictions are all a result of trying to counter the nutter....none of this my doing...

make the shipyards only create non-restricted ships, whatever they are, and use DB edits to distribute specially assigned ships.

My only gripe about OOB is that the yards are often stocked with either crap or restricted ships so if you lose your initial D7C you're faced with the decision of flying an E3Y, D6N, the ever-popular G2 or the dirt-cheap C7 that's been obviously and loudly restricted off.

In other words, use whatever rules are necessary, since most of up will play, just spend a little time with the shiplist to make sure the crap is cut out and restricted ships don't spawn, and edit the DB to distribute them.  Fairly useful since most of the ideas that are being thrown around use the premise of build cycles, so when the server's down between build cycles for cleaning, the DB can be edited to redistribute ships.  Of course, this means that once you lose it you have to fly a CL or whatever's not restricted till the next cycle.  I wouldn't reccommend making CL's restricted though, since, speaking from experience, it really really sucks flying a DD when everyone else has CA's on up.  At least in a CL/CW I stand a chance of taking a large portion of the CA's down with me :)

Actually Max, that is exactly how it would be with a SQl DB and a Web interface for assigned ships. The problem with this right now is that with the flatfile DB this isn't practical for technical reasons.

Then fly a CA.  SInce when were CA ships restricted?

Other Idea are goo, just need SQL to implemnt them.

there was one where CA's and some CL's were restricted, I just can't remember which. :(  It was all CA's and special CL's like the D5D and CLC were restriceted too.  I think it was one J'inn was in charge of before the GW series.

Pretty sure that Jinn never ran a server where CA line ships were restricted. Almost sounds like War Crusier Hell.

Max is probably thinking of Litterbox 4. Fluf ran that one.

CA's and up were assigned, but CWL's were freely available.

Ahhh yes, I didn't fly that one. Wasn't that the very first OOB server. I think SGO3 had the FM thing first, but that was the first true OOB, which just goes to prove what we already knew. IT'S ALL FLUF's FAULT!!!!

Don't blaim me for an LB server, those are clearly Fluf's fault  ;D

AOTK was the first with the FM system.

Order of Battle.

It's an attempt to add strategic "realism" to the game.  The idea is that every empire has a limited number of ships, and a set production of new ships, and when those ships are gone they are gone unless new ones are built.

Thanks for your fast reply Scipio_66  :) +1 for you. :)

Makes sense to me. resources don't get colected, and new ships don't build them selves, without man power to do so.
