I have a 40gb hard drive that I use just for backups.  The drive is in a removable hard drive case that fits into the front 5.25" drive bay of my system.  When I conduct a backup I put the hard drive into the removable bay then copy and paste all the files I want to keep safe on that drive.  When I'm done I remove the hard drive a throw it in my desk.  Since the drive only spins once or twice a month, the drive should be reliable for years.  It has become a cheap way for me to do backups of my system.
