The disengagement rule has done wonders for the abilty of a casual player or any player for that matter to make a decisive difference on the battle front…IMHO…this is a valid simulation of “space superiority”…or having to own the space before you can claim it…You first have to drive the defenders off before you can run without interference in the hex….but if you must break off the attack to a live player..you are considered to be routed for a small period of time…

This gives the casual player the ability to log on and make a big difference on the battle field in a relatively small time frame by helping out to defend or dogpile a hex...this helps the moral of the part timers imensly ...to know that what they do can make a difference...

But..

How do we balance the need and desire to restrict OOB vessels for nutters…..with easy access and variety ,and the desire of casual players to be able to make a difference in what little time they may have…

I’d like to see the return of mini fleets and escorts/ wing ships…I’d also LOVE to see a small area of the map reserved to pairs of frigates, destroyers, and PF flotilla’s…

Inverted CnC restrictions

Restrictions are phased in according to rank…rather than the loosening of restriction when gaining rank…

All sub BCH ship classes and types are unrestricted in the list….IE: all ships up to and including CA’s are unrestricted….

But what you can fly…and the make up of your mini fleets or ship pairs are delegated by rank…

By the time you can afford heavy iron(having gained PP AND rank by spending time on the server)…you face restrictions…

The specific ranks (based on average playing times) would have to researched and then overlayed with a resonable matrix of  combinations of ships to ensure that the casual players or lesser rank players cant upset the server balance...and that there would be no advantage to starting over in new accounts VS ranking up into restricted ships...

I'm not looking to open up the top end of ships to unrestriction....only seeking a way to open up the bottom end of things and put the FLEET back into "starfleet command" without upsetting the nature of a controlled atmosphere...

Any suggestions and ideas along these lines would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks for your time.

I think your idea is a good one if there was a fleet up option as there is in SFC3 then you could put together a group of players each in a fleet style ship and also if the server could hold that many ships and players, other wise I think what we have now is good but what I would like to see is the removal of PVP VCs I think it would add a bit more spark into the game.

I dont necessarily like fleeting...running hexes and drafting is a risk...a roll of the dice....it creates exitement and variety nessary...a hex is a huge space and in the fog of war you may become separated or even ambushed by superior forces....

VC's on large ships dont bother me at all....to me this simulates the blow to the war effort that loosing a capitol ship can have....until we have another working model of something better...I'd leave it...

There is allways a point of no return in a battle...the point where you lost but didnt know it yet...usually about few seconds before you actually realize it and say "Doh!"...a pilot allways has an option of fleeing the hex and becoming routed...

We lost several ships at the close of the server....such is the risk of wargaming...you loose units....not players...and NO ONE should ever confuse the two IMHO....it's only a game....

As new abilities are given to server admins or basic improvements to the server kit come online....the control the admins have will negate the need for rules governing certain aspects of DV play...you wont need a rule if the game wont let you do it in the first place ;)...just as previous bug fixes have eliminated the need for certain rules in the past...

Escorts wont be cheese when the g'racks are fixed...and you wouldnt catch a carrier or important capitol ship without one in a war anyways....

I'd like to see the variety of units you see in any quality wargame...I want them in the game...and I want them to serve a purpose...

Squadron commander is a prime example a breaking the paradigm of convention and opening up an entire new facet in the game if only someone would use it...

IMHO...as things continue to evolve we shouldnt get trapped into one way of looking at things....we have a wealth of interesting and challenging ships...I think we should be using them all... ;D

Hmm, maybe we need "PBR Fleet Hell" next.   I would like to see multiple ships come back in a non-cheesy manner and I think we can do it.

SG4 will hopefully fit the bill. All races will be featured. The ISC play a prominent role and will need and likely have a larger, than usually seen in the past, player presence. This is something long awaited and overdue.

You will see a more relaxed OoB setup, than seen previously in the GW series, (Sorry J'inn, there will be just a small bit of cheesefest control) in this 3 week server that will be more fun for all the players and will be easier to keep track of without leading to a cheesefest server and eliminating the ships of the line from being fielded. Every GW server so far has used a lot of ideas in the SGODev forum and has been a stepping stone toward what will be featured in SG4. So a lot of things have already been tried and tested and much will be familiar to the players.

I'm working on the details now and hope to post some of it soon.

I think I'm going to start learning how to effectively use the ISC. Primarily plasma armed ships without cloaks and without the robustness of the Gorn should prove...fascinating...to learn. Much as I like the Kzin and their missiles, it's getting old getting to the point where you get a ship with so many missiles in it that you can usually cripple the average computer opponent in my first pass. Unfortunately, I don't have any way to get to online play in order to test myself against or teamed up with another player.

...I hate being behind a firewall that I don't manage.

If you dont like the missile boats, try out some of the Kzin line cruisers.  The DD, MCC, CCH. and NCC are all fun to fly but you have to learn your disruptors to really excell with them.  As far as killing computer opponents most races can either blow them up or get a good crippling in on the first pass so that the match isn't too difficult.

I like them, but I'm starting to think I need to remember to look at my difficulty setting when I start a Kzin game. And Actually, I avoid using disruptors. THey suck down too much power in most cases until I get to X ships. By then, I've got MIRVs and I can usually overwhelm even enemy starbase anti-missile defenses with those. In any case, more than anything else, this is an excuse to learn a race I've virtually ignored.

Thats cool Josh. but trust me when I tell you that to survive in P v P vs a live opponent you usually need to learn to use those disruptors as well as the drones, as most pilots have a good grasp of basic drone defense.

True enough. Particularly if they have time to make a WW. Doesn't matter how many missiles you've launched at that point. They're all going to head for the WW once its out there, and that's a waste of an entire volley at tha point in most cases. I've just been working with the ISC some now(on a lark I set it to commodore difficulty level and I'm thinking I need to start back on Captain difficulty). I do ok with Romulans, but for some reason, the running with the ISC is giving me fits. I'm playing the war of Pacification basic campaign. I haven't even thought of trying the custom one yet. But for some reason, it keeps doing things like pitting me against ship much higher in class than the one I'm in. Like an I-XFF against an Orion DN0. What the heck is up with that?
