Lycos Europe has started to distribute a special screensaver in a controversial bid to battle spam. The program - titled Make Love Not Spam, and available for Windows and the Mac OS - sends a request to view a spam source site. When a large number of screensavers send their requests at the same time the spam web page becomes overloaded and slow.

Much as I dislike spammers I am not sure that this is the correct way to handle it.  Hitting even one person wrongly could do much financial harm.

I believe truth and principle do matter. If you have to sacrifice them to get the results you want, then the results aren't worth it.

I noticed that the spam e-mails I get are usually from a personal e-mail, and I would think that the owner of the account, as computer illiterate as most of us, would have no idea that they were being used for such.

NPR is a lot like NASCAR.  Two hundred miles an hour in a circle, and you end up right back where you started with nothing but lost time for the effort.
