This is from a friend on another board:
I have a wonderful pet, a dog. I say "pet" but really she's a family member.
Her name is Charlotte. We picked her out of an SPCA...or perhaps she picked us out...in 1999. My wife wanted a dog. I figured I'd be taking care of it for the most part so I decided we were going to pick out our puppy carefully.
The SPCA had a room where these puppies were all running around. We looked them all over, and they were all beautiful. Rather than randomly pick one out, I clapped my hands together and called "Come here". Charlotte came to us at that call and clap.
I trained her to be a house dog. She has specific commands letting her know where she may or may not roam. She's an amazingly quiet dog. The times she does bark are very noteable. She barks to go outside, if she's standing at the door without attention. She barks if there are wild animals outside (sometimes that includes certain people). She barks if she doesn't like a visitor (I trust her judgement).
She is a husky/shephard mix according to the SPCA. She loves to pull. So two years ago I bought a harness...which she has since outgrown...and hooked it onto a sled so she could pull our children around. I figured she'd pull one child too fast so I put BOTH my 8 yr old daughter and her 5 yr old sister onto the sled. They're big girls for their age. She did pull too fast as it was...200 yards in about 18 seconds before the girls risked jumping off the sled. It was fun.
She also pulled them both on a wagon this past spring. I kept an additional leash on her so she wouldn't go to fast. Last winter, she pulled my girls' sleds up steep hills.
I have put together a list of commands that she's pretty good about following. It amounts to a User's Manual for my dog. See, I have to find a home for my dog.
My newborn son is allergic to Charlotte and I cannot keep her. If someone out there can help me find a home for her, I really would appreciate the help.
She has her own pet pillow letting her know which room she can sleep in...this has been the living room or the recreational room in the houses we've been in. She also has a large cage for travel. Lots of toys as well...and I guess the old harness...but it's really too small for her now.
Here's her picture while Yahoo keeps it up. I think there is a more permanent site for her picture coming soon.
