GW4-More Time needed due to Frequent Interuption
« on: November 23, 2004, 07:26:03 am »
Due the numerous glitches/crashes/burps  It would be nice if several days were added to the Run of the Server in Compensation.

Anybody else feel this way, please replay here.

agreed.  It is most frustrating when 9 out of 10 missions end with a lost connection error.

I believe only a couple of hours in downtime has occurred so far.

I have been on a lot, at all times, and 9 out of 10 is a bit of an exageration.

Depends on your luck, mission times, etc.
With my mauler's penchant for 5-7 minute missions, I've had cases where I'd have the server crash out every time I got out of a mission, and after 2-3 of them in a row, I tend to give up.  My play time is around 9-10 PM EST, and this has happened like 3 different nights now.

You are doing something wrong if It's taking you 7 minutes to run missions in a Mauler :)

that's not the point, since the one 2-minute mission I had was when I alphaed a Fed FFB with an SPL and laid an NSM on it as I overran it and it popped when the NSM went off.

Most of my missions are 6-10 minutes, less if I have enough transporters to capture quickly, but as with Julin, I give up after it happens twice in a row.

To make things go smoother, "prime" time operations will be moved to my server which seems to operate more stably under load.   I also will clean the DB more frequently.

Sigh....

Well J'inn there is something else that is an old American tradition.  It is called extortion... or as you call it 'billing hours".  Please don't make us compose a nice letter to Shopasaurus detailing the deals that can be found in every store in the D.C. Area.  I hate to see a man killed in such a fashion... but when you try and cut off a junkie... well they can't always be held accountable for their actions.

Yeah 9-10PM EST is the worst as the server is most loaded then, but as DH mentioned he is mitigating this by moving it to his server during heavy load times. As for the outages, they have only amounted to a few hours downtime and the server schedule already has that built into it, since it was a 2 week server that started on a Sat at noon and ends on a Sat at midnight.

Not sure if we ever got a definitive answer on a Thanksgiving day shutdown which would have extended the server until Sunday at midnight, though.

Um, J'inn, are we staying up for Thanksgiving?   Do you also realize that the FINAL build Cycle is on Thanksgiving?

For the record if it is up, crashes, and there is no admin available to restart it, them's the breaks.

I am pleased that I am not alone in the sentiment expressed here.  More time would be nice, due to the lost time for outages on a 1 for 1 bases.  I know last week..In a space of 40 minutes every single mission ended with server disconnect and I was inconvienced by the loss of that "pre-allocated" investment of time.  This leads to frustration and disatifaction in general.  When the server kit is "Grok'd" this problem may be something we can tell our grandkids about.

"Yes, I know the server kit crashes.  No software is perfect grandson.  But in my day, we would have 5 crashes in 40 minutes.  I once defeated 2 Live Federation Players in my War Cruiser and did not get the credit because the server died.  Your generation has it easy, a crash what, every 4 months."

"But grandpa, I had just took out an Andromedan Dominator that was raiding."

"Well, when I was your age, we didnt have real Dominators to challange our skills on, and even non stock tholians, without web.  It was horrible grandson, your generation has it so good."

I'm not sure how one can complain about being "inconvenienced" when yer playing on someone else's server for free.
I'm sure it's inconvenient at times foradmins to put up with having to monitor the server as well, as well as move it around, try and fix it, try and set it up
and try and get a stable server kit running when very few people show up at all on "test servers".

Just get on, jump in a PvP and try and have fun.

I don't think we've had a severely populated server that had 80% uptime.  Server crashes are part and parcel of the game, and need to be planned for.

Hence my post.  Support for the fact that the server has been crashing, and nothing more than that.

I really don't think that the server needs an extension, unless it's a drastic crash, like say half of a planned day... ;)

We've lost 4 hours out of 216 so far.  that is less than 2 percent downtime thank you very much  ;D

EDIT:  Prime time tonight was un-interupted.

Thanks for your efforts DH. But statistical analysis of downtime doesn't account for lost DV's coming out of missions to a down server, or pilots logging off in frustration. Most haven't posted here - but take my word they're out there.

Re extra hours... I like the original idea of ending on a Sunday. If hours are extended it could give an advantage to the side with more available time on weekdays. We've seen a lot of "pilot availability factor" on this server.

Doesn't matter, this is not up for debate.   Server ends on schedule.

Just because you lost connection to the server does NOT mean that the server crashed, there are two sides to every connection...

Server ends on schedule my ass. Turn it off Thanksgiving day. Move the final build to Friday. Extend the server to Sunday because of Thanksgiving. As a result: MORE people will be able to play, server downtime on thursday due to a crash and no admin will be a non-issue, we can all get a momentary f*cking reprieve from nerve wracking black hole sucking dyna whoring and spend some time quietly refreshing our nerves reading a book, buying a ho for the night or spending time with family and friends like most of us will be doing.

I think it will make all parties happy.
