Creating a new texture sheet
« on: November 22, 2004, 05:45:16 pm »
I'm looking at creating a new texture sheet .. ( I guess that's what ya call it.)  I have an idea I would like to use on the Sovy ..  or other related designs.  Soooo  .  I'm looking for something that will show me how to do that.  I know how to use the photoshop (well ... sort of ... in my own limited way)..  but I have no idea how to make it translate to a texture sheet.

Hmmmm  some how I think I'm doing a poor job of explaining this too.  (sorry).

If someone could point me in the right direction to a tutorial for beginners  ( you know ...  the type that a bit hard of understanding !)  ....  I would appreciate it !!

thanks

My favorite way to make a texture is to take screen shots of my model from above or the side, paste the screenie into PowerPoint, and then use the power point drawing engine to scetch the detales onto my model. I leave the shapes in out rageous colors and then screenshot the slide show. I then paste the screenie onto a base texture, leaving the once outrageous color as transpartent (in MS Paint). I do this multiple times with multiple shades of my base texture. If you examine some of my ships, you will be able to track some of the lines from one colored panel to another. The Hygira Plantia web site used to have an excellent tutorial on this.

'IF' you have Max, there is a plugin called Texporter. If you place a UVW map over your chosen model (or selected faces there of) and use Texporter, it will export an image (jpg, bmp etc) showing the faces in differing colours. Use this as a template (on a seperate layer) to do your image and also to line your textures up to the correct faces once done. I use its and its really easy, can take a bit of fiddling with the 'selected only face' and 'cull back faces' options, but you'll pretty quickly get the hang of it. It's a free download as far as I remember, but if you have problems finding it let me know, I have it for Max 5.

have you tried taking a copy of the stock taldren textures and editing those to get what you want?

Buzzard,
If you are talking about creating new textures from scratch with out a reference then you need max or milkshape to apply them. Those programs also have tools that help you place the work you are doing in the right areas. If you have neither then you are going to have to use the orginal texture as the background and put layout lines on top of it. Then replace that background with the basic pattern you wanted and build on top of it from there.
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

Remember the axiom of big government bureaucrats: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. When, finally, under the crushing weight of taxes and regulation, it stops moving, subsidize it.
