Someone help a noob out at texture mapping.....
« on: November 24, 2004, 11:53:44 pm »
Hey guys.  Does anyone here know how to map textures, specifically light maps, to a ship model using 3DS Max 5?  I am really desperate to release these two kitbashes I have.  Aside from the lack of lightmaps on the nacelles, she's ready to go.  Please, someone help me out on this.

All you do for a light map is add a black layer to you texture directly below the lights, windows, etc., then replace any colors for the lights with white, save as texture_i.bmp where texture is replaced by the correct texture name. In Max 5, open the material editor, select the material that corresponds to the area you want to light up, and where it says self-illumination, click the little box and then select the light map and that should do her. ;D I'll see if I have a tutorial on this aspect and send it to ya. ;)

I was really hoping to just get a tutorial.  I've been trying here and there with the Material Editor so hopefully I'll figure it out soon.

Maybe this will help...

J-O-K-E-R has created two useful video tutorials for MAX users, so you might want to take a look at...

http://www.frost-works.com/galactic_truckstop/mars_station/main/Contents/Tutorials.htm

The first one give a whistlestop overview on how to apply a texture and the illumination map.
The second shows how to create 'break models'.

And I have some specific tutorials for SFC specific (pretty well) purposes up here:

http://www.the-tcs.net/_hosted/atheorhaven/html/_sgg/m1m2_1.htm

Topics include:

Converting between SFC versions (basic tutorial)
Converting a Lightwave mesh to SFC
Adding illumination to a SFC model

The Lightwave to SFC tutorial goes through the basics of converting a mesh from Lightwave to 3dsMax, and the illumination tutorial shows you how to add lighting to any ship without having to remap all your textures.  :)  And it's the basis for the SFC conversion tutorial..
..ooOOoo..totally useless information..ooOOoo..
