D.Net announces the SFC OP Serverkit Development Project!
« on: November 18, 2004, 12:36:46 pm »
We here at Dynaverse.Net are proud to announce that we've been given the SFC OP Serverkit Source code and are now actively working on the following aspects of the serverkit. This was one of Taldren's last gifts to the community, and we're honored that we were selected for this project! Our team consists of several long standing community members who you all know and love, as well as the Legendary MagnumMan!

MagnumMan has graciously stepped out of "retirement" and is the "Keeper of the Code". He's brought his Bugzilla DB back on line and he'll be the end / all of the update process. Our OP SQL Dev team will submit all bugs and appropriate fixes to Magnum who will ensure that the changes made are tracked, as well as ensure the integrity of the serverkit. We will, of course, release such documentation as is warranted to provide the community with a "readme" of the fixes in the serverkit. At this time the team is full and we have no need for additional members.

What we're focusing on right now:

1. MySQL implementation : we're basically talking about fully functional MySQL interoperability here. 'Nuff said!
2. Serverkit Performance Improvements: Removing memory leak related bugs, and optimizing the code itself for better performance including possibly updating some of the library's the serverkit utilizes.
3. Database interaction. Currently we're working on some fixes that will allow for more efficient database utilization.

As you can probably guess we'll need the communities  help in testing the new rev's as they are developed, so do your part and get on the testing servers when we announce a test! Of course, in the spirit of community, we'll do our best to schedule these test servers when they do not coincide with a major campaign.

The D.Net OP MySQL Dev team are all under NDA's, and MagnumMan is still under a NDA and sub contractor's agreement from when KHOROMAG did the SFC2 EAW bug fixes and serverkit optimizations, so don't try ta bug us! We ain't saying !!!

What we will say is once our teams project goals have been accomplished, we will be releasing the new builds for the ENTIRE community. If the community requests it, we can certainly create a forum for suggestions / comments for the serverkit project, just contact a Moderator or Admin and let them know.

Once again, Dynaverse.Net's continued dream to further the playability of the SFC Series of games brings more content, more FUN. We'd like to thank TALDREN MagnumMan, and the D.Net MySQL Dev Team for volunteering their time on this project.

Question:

When you get done stomping bugs, are you going to look at enhancements to the kit?

Some things can be done, but having the client source would open up more possibilities, for example offensive plasma D, plasma bolts, fixing the I-torps, interlocking the G racks with AMD, etc.  I also wanted to change ther ESG vs Hellbore interaction graphic but never did get around to it... and I wanted to add ship refits to the spacedock in Dyna as well... all of these things would be possible - with the client source.

So, Dutch, for the computer programming uninitiated, does this mean more stable servers and more sophisticated server parameters?  Better matchmaking on the Dynaverse?

Just wondering.

And good to hear... er... read from you again!

No doubt - but I was thinking specifically of enhancements to the server kit, not the client.  There is a lot that could be done with the server kit in terms of enhancements, even without access to the client source.

This is great news. Let me know when a test server is coming online, and I will be there.

And I think a forum for the server kit development is a good idea if the discussions start overflowing the D2 server forum.

Right now we're just modifying small parts of the OP D2 serverkit SQL code to try and get the kit to run stably with a good load of players while on MySQL. (MySQL is a database server that the dynaverse server can use to store its information instead of as a file on disk. Using MySQL will allow server admins and scripters to make really neat stuff for us!)

There are plans for a more extensive overhaul to the serverkit in the works, but so far all that is mandated is to remove bugs / improve function - no changes in gameplay.  (For now; it doesn't necessarily mean we can't do so conservatively in the future if we get the client source)

P.S. (So login to the MySQL Test Server!)  ;D

Im thrilled about this. Thankyou taldren! Alot of us loved sfc2, maybe we can build back the fanbase and get you guys to produce another version in the future. The client isnt a big deal, so dont get too upset, its already modable. well guys ill see you on the dyna!
