Bit of help needed...
« on: November 08, 2004, 10:08:05 pm »
I'm getting a "unable to locate Directory server" message and I've use the minipatcher but it doesn't seem to have done
anything so if I can get the manuel version that would be great.

Thanks
Capt. Jem

Your WONServerSetup.gf in MetaAssets\ServerProfiles\Multiplayer should read as follows:

Quote
Name="ServerSetup"

[Settings]
SingleThreaded = 1
CreateCentralSwitch = 0
SinglePlayer = 0
BlockSize             = 10000 // How many micro-seconds to spend on server side stuff before doing page flip
DelayMultiple          = 1.0   // What multiple of time to wait before going back to server side stuff
PacketQueLimit         = 75    // What

[CentralSwitchSetup]
Listen = 0

[WONDirectoryServer]
//ServerPath = "/StarFleetCommand2/Game/Release"
ServerPath = "/StarFleetCommand2/Game/Release"
//ServerPath = "/StarFleetCommand2/Game/Release_Test"

[WONDirectoryServer/Addresses]
//0="sfc2.west.won.net:15101"
//1="sfc2.central.won.net:15101"
//2="sfc2.east.won.net:15101"
0=client.sfc.dynaverse.net:15101
1=client.dynaverse.net:15101
2=sfc2.directory.stasis.ca:15101

[Clients]
ChatClient            = 1
SecurityClient         = 1

[Launch]

This is what the mini-patcher does. Sure you don't have a firewall up? If your DNS servers are down the IP address for the directory server is 63.101.60.125

Yeah I checked my Firewall and my ports are still open...

No, no no. Kill it altogether, all of them, then test.

Yes, just to rule it out for testing, completely disable all firewalls (temporarily to check the D2 login).

... I can ping the Ip you gave me for the Directory server

But can it ping you? (the critical part).

Yes I'm behind a router

P.S. Age, I've already tried the patcher (both of them) that Firesoul made.

P.P.S. You know it would probably have helped if I had given more information ::)

I've been able to play on the Dynaverse after the switch from Taldren's Directory servers however recently I started having problems with SFC2 and decided it was time for a reinstall so I unistalled and erased everything and did a fresh reinstall. I applied the various patches and OP+ and everything appeared to be working but then I discovered that I couldn't log in to the D2.

As for hardware, I'm connected into a Linksys BEFSR81 router with the ports 47624, 2300-2400, 6073 (SFC3) and 6500-6515 (GSA) currently open.

Are you allowing "WAN area requests" (pings from outside) at the router? If not, you need to. Are UPnP and AOL controls disabled on the router? (They should be)  If you are using port forwarding then configure your lan statically, do not use the Linksys' DHCP server.

I get the feeling I'm fogetting something simple... (can anyone else think of what it might be?)

Do not use the DMZ, forward ports to static lan IPs.

Make absolutely sure that ALL software firewalls are COMPLETELY disabled. Please...

What patch procedure did you follow?

I'm using static IPs and UPnP and AOL controls are disabled, I have no software firewalls (using 98).

I installed 2500 from the CD, patched to 2550 then to 2552. After that I installed OP+, EZini and then the minipatcher for the D2

I rather doubt I am but I can't be sure as I don't know where to look to find out (I've already flipped through all of the menu tabs).

However could that even be the problem as I've played on the D2 in the past with my current setup.

Thank you for your help Bonk

Here's another thought, sometimes the directory server will time out depending on your path to it (or more likely its current load in other tasks), giving a false firewall message.

Try just backing up to the "Game Connections" screen and try the D2 a second or third time in a row (if you havent already). I've had the directory server give me a false firewall message (or just fail to respond) but it will work if I try again a few seconds later.

This was the simple thing I was forgetting.

There are 3 versions of the BEFSR81  ( http://www.linksys.com/download/ ) and possible variations in the firmware, but you should find the setting on the "Security...Filters" page, make sure  "Block Anonymous Internet Requests." is set to disabled.

As regards your question Tracey, while I haven't played a game on GSA recently, I have played a few IP games with Leroy and DieHard
after my reinstall and there haven't been any problems on my end there.

Try playing a game on GSA, just to be sure it works there as well. If it does, then the only problem appears to be connecting to the directory server, and the problem began after reinstalling. Its not a firewall or port forwarding issue then, so it must be a configuration issue.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling everything again as a last resort. Even get a copy of someone else's gf file that you know works, despite having used the minipatcher.
