Could someone whip this up?
« on: November 03, 2004, 04:26:09 am »
I was hoping that someone could whip this baby up...

It's an SFB F-14 Tomcat fighter.  The reason I ask is that "General War 4", a D2 campaign, will be kicking off in a couple of weeks (check the D2 forum for info).  It's the fourth in a series of campaigns that simulates the 'historic' SFB General War at certain points during said war.

It will be the first time that F-14's will be used (as opposed to the stock Taldren fighters), and being the SFB/TOS model kind of guy I am, well...you get the point.

Anywho, thanks to any who consider it.

Yes, I second that. We also need the A-10.. and the F-14, F18, etc.... GW4 is round the corner, but for SG4, which will be a lil while in coming to a dyna near you, fighters will have their own model folders much as ships do, so visual identification of fighters will be very important. DH's SGODev's SFB shiplist won't limit this to fed fighters... ;) He has brilliantly carried over ftr improvements to all races.

An SFB and TMP versions would be good for the entire fighter lineup for all races... Gee... I'm not asking for much, am I?

Can you say double spaced fighters? :D ... if we are lucky, DH's ftrlist will replace the stock ftr list much as FS's shiplist replaced the sh*tlist. I'm excited!

I guess what we need is concept art, module covers, and captains log pics. Stuff like that. To be honest, I dont even know what race that is in this pic here.

you might try looking here, FleetDock 13. IOt was designed for SFC one but it would be easier to convert than to build and texture from scratch. I don't have a gamespy ID so I can not download it, but if some one was to get it and convert it I could retexture it for you

at worse contact ghost or the other members of that site, they were all extremely helpful in the past, especially about sending models already made to ppl.
People always said they wanted the government to listen to them and now the government is listening, taking notes and names...and coming to see you soon!

<smacks self on forehead>...of course...I should have thought of Fleetdock 13.  When you mentioned it, GaFY, I remembered that Bonk's SFB_OP Mod uses most everything from FD13, and upon checking my SFB_OP folder, found that, indeed, it has the Federation F-14, A-10, and two F-18's (one w/ drones, one w/o).  Although I suppose you could say they are a bit "dated", they do have illumination maps for SFC2, and are servicable.  Of course, that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see some "new" takes on these fighters, heheh...

The fighter in the foreground of the pic that Dizzy posted is a Kzinti TAAS fighter (Tactical Advanced Assault Shuttle), and the one in the background is a Klingon Z-series fighter.

Here is a pic of the cover of Module J2...

The fighter in the foreground is the A-20F, I believe, and you can see F-14's in the background.

I think I speak for most dyna admins when I ask Modelers for low poly ftr  models... under 200-150 @. Reason being... Carriers will field 24 ftrs @. More if we could get them too, which is a possibility. ;) A medium carrier can field 12-16. So there could possibly be a CRAP load of ftrs in a battle, and more than 200 polys may cause extreme frame rate loss. So please keep this in mind if you tackle a ftr mod.

If possible, maybe someone can throw together a ftrlist showing the year first available and last year available for all ftrs so that we can setup a definitive time period for the transition from SFB to TMP style theme...?

Maybe have low poly and high poly variants?

I dont know what the poly ceiling is for an average machine. Tracey, lets look at the numbers...

An average ship today seems to come in around 5k polys. FS's models average that or less... So for sake of argument, lets use 5k.

A good benchmark for no lag, of course, would be a 3v3 dyna match. Using Multi-ship rules, lets say we have equal teams of a carrier and 2x escorts and 2 other ships for a total of 5 per team. Thats 10 ships at 5k for 50k polys. Thats a lot. You'd prolly have lag in an average rig depending on which way the camera is pointed... Sector assault just makes it worse. :P

Now, a full carrier, imo, fielding 24 ftrs, should not have the entire ftr group exceed the carriers poly total. So 24*200= 4,800. I think that is perfect.

We dont even have a modeler volunteer yet. If the project does take off, there will be a model and ftrlist D/L pack made from whatever models we are able to obtain, and I'd prefer a 200 or less poly ftr count to be done 1st and any higher poly ftr pack to come second. The point of being able to use it at all is for ftr recognition OoB and CnC. A model pack with all the individual folders and models in it... is the direction SGODev ftrlist has been going since SG3. It's slowly taking shape. If we could find an interested modeler... Tracey... You have $$$. Make an offer. :D

Seriously though, the F-14 appears not to need many polys anyway, and since fighters are pretty small, you probably wouldnt see the detail anyway.

Might be worth an experiment to see who here with fast computers can run the highest number of polys in a game though.

There are already a host of different ftr models that have been done. We pretty just need a few poly changes is all.

I can do a lot of the texture changes myself. Hrmmm. I guess I can post some model pics I have and go from there.

IMO, some nice looking fighters in the pipeline.

Desty Nova did the F18. Even being as frugal as he is though with polies it still weighs in at 487. Click on fft.zip if you want it, since nightsoft is down, again, at the moment. ::)
